This one just came out, but If you haven't seen this video series before, it's a french group that grabs the "best of the internet" and posts a compilation video weekly/bi-weekly.

Essentially what is happening is that the ball of metal is so hot that it is creating its own bubble of steam around it. As it cools off the bubble begins to lose integrity and you end up with rapid pulses of steam being formed and collapsing.
