I don't know about the US, but here in Australia a DUI is an easy way to get a criminal conviction.

Generally the court systems are more lenient towards public figures. Many will get their charges dropped or the punishment lowered to merely a fine, as they will appeal these things as far up as they can due to having the money to do so, and by doing so they are more likely to get a lenient judge as well.
