Sweden may use weapons to force submarine to surface (if they find it)
Sweden could use force in its search for a suspected foreign submarine, a senior Swedish naval officer has told the BBC.
Real Admiral Anders Grenstad said if a submarine were discovered, weapons could be used to make it surface.
But the military operation is focused on gathering intelligence, he added.
Russia has denied suggestions that one of its submarines got into trouble near Stockholm last week after distress signals were reportedly intercepted.
Before you all laugh at the notion of a military official talking about using weapons as if it's newsworthy, in Sweden it sort of is. We usually don't have potential military conflicts right by our doorstep, and some politicians in our country even seem surprised (and horrified) at the mere thought of us using force to protect our borders. That's how rare this sort of event is.
this is turning into the hunt for red october.... but in sweden
"Real Admiral Anders Grenstad said if a submarine were discovered, weapons could be used to make it surface."
I would hope he wasn't a fake admiral.

Not sure why they wrote Real Admiral but he is Konteramiral which translates to Counter Admiral.
Didn't we use explosives to try to force submarines to the surface during the cold war, when submarine activity was a lot more common?

Wasn't most of all that "submarine activity" literally fish farts?

I think it was a typo and they meant to say "Rear Admiral", which is an actual rank at least in the US Navy.
Given how Sweden has repeatedly ignored intrusions into our air and water space by foreign vessels and operatives, nothing will happen this time around. It is just a show for the masses.

They tell us...
They need to find it first, or confirm it's even there for that matter. They'd look pretty dumb if they resorted to randomly dropping bombs throughout the the archipelago only to not find anything.

That's why they said in the article that they might use weapons if they found it...

Yes. Depth Charge Bombs were used on suspected foreign submarines in Swedish territorial waters during the Cold War.

Use one of these! Note the submarine sniffer on the back and under the cockpit

The only aircraft the Swedish AF doesn't have... an aircraft specifically for anti-submarine maritime patrols
Yeah, our sonar equipped helicopters got scrapped in 2008, with the plan to have them replaced 2018

that was a bad decision straight off the bat, as that meant Sweden no aircraft that could passively detect any submarine in it's range and the timeline for it's replacement is obviously way too prolonged thus exposing a 'skill' gap in the military / border protection.

This is a reoccurring theme all across Europe.. Its almost as if they all forgot that things might be needed in these gaps.

Who needs aircraft carriers right? Might as well bin the aircraft that goes on them too while we're at it. Not like we might need em is it.

Getting rid of the sub hunters was a bad move, though.
I've also noticed somewhere that some officials said it may be the prototype for a new submarine class. Wonder if the commander is called Marco Ramius.

Every time someone mentions the submarine I just take a sip of vodka and listen to this

It's getting kinda silly though
Give me a ping, Vasily. One ping only, please.
somebody sent a submarine here and then back and managed to stir up our entire country. good job
No but seriously, call the US.
We'd love to deploy our P8 Poseidon.
That thing is pretty bad-ass.
Modern submarines are so big and metal-y that they create their own magnetic field. The P8, and to a lesser extent the P3 are equipped with MAD (Magnetic Anomaly Detectors) systems that will help locate submerged objects.
The sub might be quiet, but it's still an object in the water. Slam it with active sonar and freak them out with MAD, and you'll find it.

well yes, it is an incursion into the sovereign territory of another country.

I'll admiral your rear ~
Before people get all excited about Swedes blowing up submarines, there are special depth charges designed for signaling purposes. It's basically the weapons equivalent of knocking on the hatch and saying "Ey, there are people up here who wish to speak to you".
