Two U.S. servicemembers were killed early Saturday during a "sustained attack" at a joint base in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province, military officials said.
The slain Americans were both Marines, a U.S. defense official said, while three or four troops were wounded.
Attackers used a combination of small firearms and rocket-propelled grenades in their attack, according to the official.
They may have breached the "outer perimeter" of the base -- which includes the American-run Camp Leatherneck and the British-run Camp Bastion -- added the official.
Maj. Martin Crighton, a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force, said the base came under indirect fire.
He said there were no organized demonstrations outside its gates -- as have sprung up worldwide in recent days, targeting U.S. authorities following the release of a privately produced anti-Islam video -- prior to the attack.
ISAF released a statement indicating the two deaths happened early Saturday.
By approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday (6 p.m. ET Friday), the situation was under control and security patrols were assessing damage, said the U.S. defense official.
Exactly one week ago Friday, Prince Harry -- an Apache helicopter pilot in the British military -- arrived in Afghanistan to begin his four-month deployment, Britain's Ministry of Defense said.
He was to be based at Camp Bastion, which is in what is considered the Taliban heartland, with the 100-strong 662 Squadron, 3 Regiment Army Air Corps.
Harry, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and third in line to the British throne, is a captain in Britain's Army Air Corps.
The prince "was in no way in any danger" during the latest attack, said Crighton, the ISAF spokesman.
Remember when everybody was saying how his presence was a bad idea? A good notion but a bad idea? Yeah, me too. The British media was buzzing with this about 5 years ago.
What has this publicity stunt earned us? 2 dead US marines. Not even from the same fucking country as that idiot. He just needs to go play some more strip pool in Vegas and stay out of the middle east.

I can see where you're coming from, I feel so bad for the US Marines who were killed. If Prince Harry wanted to go and fight he should have done it without the publicity, he's just drawing attention and getting other people killed.
inc shitstorm.

I think they attacked more due to the fact that they are an active fighting force that attacks FOBs and other bases quite regularly, with a few large attacks a year, than him being there. He is a member of the British military, he gets deployed too. Bagram Air Field just got one heck of a rocket attack, and on June 1st of this year FOB Salerno got hit by a 10,000 KG bomb. I took a look at the ruined dining facility and thought it fortunate that more people did not die from that one. You can't blame an attack on him just for his presence.

'Publicity stunt'? He's doing his job. First people complain that the Royals contribute nothing, then they complain when they actually go out to the front lines and fight.
Also, you put it across as if primary goal of the attack was to kill/capture Prince Harry - when it wasn't. Stop trying to hold someone who wasn't even there responsible for two marines getting killed.

Because it was Prince Harry that decided to write a newspaper report letting the world know about him going to fight, right?
And again, it comes back to the double standards: on the one hand we can censor the press (ala WWII) but then everyone will cry about freedom of speech, or we can accept that the information will get leaked but then have people moan about the consequences.

Yea, they tried to keep Prince Harry's presence in the military secret. You can blame the assholes in the media for making a story of it and putting people at risk.

Why did you draw the conclusion that the attack is because of Prince Harry's presence? People attack bases even when royalty aren't about, it's a war. If you want to get pissed off, maybe you should think about the assholes who killed the marines.
