Secretary of State John Kerry warned of serious repercussions for Russia on Monday if last-ditch talks over the weekend to resolve the crisis in Ukraine failed to persuade Moscow to soften its stance.

Kerry will travel to London for a Friday meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ahead of a Sunday referendum vote in the Crimea region to secede from Ukraine and join the Russian Federation.
U.S. and European officials argue that Moscow is orchestrating the referendum and waging an intimidation campaign with thousands of Russian troops controlling the region. If Russian-backed lawmakers in Crimea go through with the Sunday referendum, Kerry said the U.S. and its European allies will not recognize it as legitimate under international law.
The U.S. and Europe on Monday would then unite to impose sanctions on Russia, Kerry told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee Thursday during a hearing on the State Department's budget.
make fun of Bush all you want, he'd of done something about this by now. He'd of probably invaded Poland by now.
I really really hope that he doesn't make any military promises.

Seriously, please stop talking about military action U.S. government. Please stop.

They say they would impose sanctions.
It's literally at the end of the quote in the OP

I know. My post was mainly in response to the other reports of possible military action (by the joint chiefs.)
It just means if something does happen, they can say, "Well, we warned you."

nothing will happen. The majority of this country doesn't give a shit and only cares about not having another god damn war
even if it wasn't a superpower
Did they tell Russia it will hurt our feelings if they invade?
empty promises are no better than lies
They're way better than lies, man. They're future-lies. They're like, a quantum super-position of lie and truth until you break them or keep them at some point in the future, then bam, you collapse the wave-function and it's either or! Empty promises are the best, man.
Here... Here, I'll make an empty promise. 'I will not press the reply button on this post'. This is so far true at the time of writing.
[editline]14th March 2014[/editline]
...And BAM, collapsed into a reality of lies. See? Wasn't that cool?
Good thing Obama was elected. Romney called for increased spending in the military sector and wanted to be more aggressive with our 'rivals', namely the 'communists' in China and Russia. He'd surely have sent in troops by now.

Usa you're breakin my balls here
guys we're gonna send nukes obiously.......!!!!
What is the threat backed by? Are we supposed to attack them if they don't comply? I don't get it.
Sanctions are gonna do jackshit really to Russia. The only reason it hurt the Russian economy thus far was the threat of countries in the EU and Middle East doing it. That will hurt Russia, not the United States and Canada getting butthurt.

It doesn't matter who would have gotten voted in, but we would absolutely not have sent troops in against Russia.
This is 2014, not 1914. World super powers don't (directly) fuck with each other anymore, this hasn't happened since WWII ended. Theres far too much at stake economically, and the world might potentially end if one side gets a little too ballsy with a nuke.
kerry running his mouth at bad times seems to be the trend
He knows well Russia won't progress past Crimea so this is a self fulfilling command and he can make big shoulders later going "WE DID SHOW THEM DIDN'T WE"
Crazy that it's just two months since John Kerry was fucking about with potatoes with Sergei Lavrov

We'll Show Them, Kerry, We won't show them!
If we have to get involved militarily, at least lets be creative. Redeploy US Subs to Russian shipping lanes and harbors. Troll the fuck out of them.
Cut internet cables along the floor. Deploy cables to tangle and disable screws or impede rudders on cargo ships. Cut anchor cables. Destroy fishing nets and traps. Fill crab traps with rocks.
Don't hurt anyone, as that would likely start armed conflict, but do generally be a giant dick.
Technically only the USS Jimmy Carter is capable of doing most of these things, but I'm guessing the LA class subs can do some of them with a little work.

Frankly I'd prefer we stay out of it entirely. But if we gotta use the military, lets stick to making our sanctions extra annoying, rather than shooting up the Russians.

Hey, they at least gave you Canadian bacon, butter tarts, Tim Horton's, and Nanaimo Bars as compensation for foisting him off on to you folks. I think one annoying singer is compensation enough for that. Oh and don't forget Dungeons of Dredmor.
