France, the country’s former colonial power, pledged Tuesday to send 1,000 troops there after declaring last week that the situation was “on the verge of genocide.” Something terrible is happening in this country in the middle of Africa. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes, and an unknown number have been killed in attacks over the past several months. Post correspondent Sudarsan Raghavan, based in Nairobi, helps explain the crisis and why world powers are suddenly so concerned. ...● Aren’t U.S. troops in central Africa, aiding the search for Joseph Kony, the warlord who leads the Lord’s Resistance Army? Yes, and Kony is widely thought to be hiding in the Central African Republic. But he and his band of murderous rebels are not involved in the ongoing crisis. For more than two decades, however, the LRA has killed, maimed and kidnapped villagers across the region. ● Is the country on the verge of a genocide? France has said so, and a special U.N. adviser called the crisis “one of the worst human rights and humanitarian crises of our time.” The United States has been more cautious in its assessments (and has pledged $40 million to strengthen an African Union force in the country, but it has said that U.N. peacekeepers are not yet needed).
News out of Sub-Saharan Africa seems to appear out of nowhere.
Here goes France, showing the world how you're supposed to do this global police work properly again.

As much as I hate to say, africa has seen so much war/genocide/shit that news about this stuff doesn't even matter to me anymore, as concerning as it should be. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this is a good thing, I've just gotten used to seeing that entire congo/sudan/central africa/africa in general as a wartorn area. (obviously there are many exceptions as there are many countries in africa, some of which are completely fine.)
I wish Africa had their shit together, so much potential but a lot of it is a complete and total shit hole (there are cities that are stable yes! of course, but you get the point)
I thought I read somewhere that Kony was discussing surrender or peace?
This doesn't have anything to do with Kony, as it says in the article.
I wish Africa had their shit together, so much potential but a lot of it is a complete and total shit hole (there are cities that are stable yes! of course, but you get the point)
unfortunately, even if they get their shit together, they're apt to overexploit their resources and then end up worse off because of it. developing countries have few checks on economic growth (regarding sustainability), and (pretty dishearteningly) that is known to cause crop failures. things might get worse before they can get better.

The moral and material debt relations that entire African nations have on big businesses are used to the fullest, usually at the expense of africans. foreign aid should probably be eased up and better regulated, but it wont solve every problem.

(so China can exploit/buy African resources)

Other people do too, but is it actually used properly? Aside from donations and stuff like that, I wish religion wouldn't be up its own ass. actually using Religion properly could help Africa I imagine but, I don't know how well it's currently doing over there. :v:
Send in the fucking army kill every single one of those fucking murderers.
Oh Africa! Who else but you, you scamp!
Send in the fucking army kill every single one of those fucking murderers.
I doubt this will work.
I doubt this will work.
"Murder those Murderers!"
Is this going to be like the Ugandan genocide where indecisiveness of the UN and general bureaucracy allow for many thousands to die?
I wish Africa had their shit together, so much potential but a lot of it is a complete and total shit hole (there are cities that are stable yes! of course, but you get the point)
Africa is a very big continent. This is a single country.
It seems like every single group that sends soldiers to that area ends up committing atrocities.
Is this going to be like the Ugandan genocide where indecisiveness of the UN and general bureaucracy allow for many thousands to die?
You mean the Rwandan Genocide right?
You mean the Rwandan Genocide right?
There is also a Ugandan genocide.
So France is doing its best to send troops in and get the U.N. Peacekeepers involved, but the U.S. is basically saying "nah, let's wait and see what happens." It's like they're ignoring the fact that the last time they decided to do jack shit, the Rwandan genocide occurred and 1 million people died because it wasn't in the U.N. country's 'best interests' to intervene and maybe prevent a couple hundred thousand deaths.
