The Windows 10 Anniversary Update just keeps getting crazier. After teaming up with Ubuntu to build an entire Linux subsystem and Unix's Bash shell into Windows 10, Microsoft is now integrating Android-specific features into the OS. If you're an Android user, you'll be able to mirror your phone notifications on your Windows 10 computer, and if you dismiss a notification on one device, it will be dismissed on all your devices.
Microsoft actually gave cloud capabilities to the entire Action Center in Windows 10, allowing Windows 10 devices to sync notification centers with one another. Since Android 4.3, Android has provided a way to ship the entire notification panel off to other apps. With the Cortana app, Microsoft is connecting these capabilities, provided you sign in to both devices with your Microsoft account. You don't just see the notifications—you can interact with them, too. The demo (which starts at about 16:30 in this video) demonstrates replying in-line to an Android SMS notification from a Windows 10 device.
Perhaps if Microsoft led people to upgrade to 10 with cool features like these first off instead of forcing peoples hands with forced updates, windows 10 would have been liked a lot more.
I have to say though, i am plenty pleased about their recent developments
Damnit, it will only work through Cortana? I really don't want to change the region settings on my PC and get the Android .apk from somewhere else than the store just so I can use this.
Dont they already have it? You get similar notifications from facebook in the lower right.
what is happening, this is scary

unsure if you'll need to have cortana on the computer, but it'll need to be installed onto the phone for it to fetch notifications
It depends how it is implemented into windows
Windows 10 is beast — better than all its prior iterations.
We've hadn't had a Windows Vista situation in nearly 10 years.
You could do this pretty simply by using pushbullet, nice to see native integration tho

chrome notifications =/= w10 notifications
you allowed fb to send you notifications, in OS X they're built in but in Windows they're not. Android notification integration will render chrome notifications useless for most services

8 was pretty much it
8 was pretty much it
Only because of consumer backlash and a weird start menu decision. In all other ways, it's not comparable to the situation with Vista at all; Vista was an unstable piece of shit when it came out.

I'm preferring 8.1 over 10 tbh
Just seems to run a lot smoother than 10 especially when I'm on a bad connection (10 seems to shit itself when I have bad internet).
I might consider going back to 10 later though as I've just picked up a win10 mobile and global notifications would be nice.
Making Windows more open and compatable with everything might make me consider upgrading to 10.
Maybe.

Eh, I could do with the "modern app" Start Menu opening the moment I click it instead of being excessively delayed when my PC is under load. Even on Win7 the start menu pretty much goes unresponsive only when the entire explorer.exe process does.

no, there were plenty of problems besides that behind NDA in development.
This combined with the Linux integration and everything they've been doing with Xbox on windows lately is really putting Microsoft in the forefront imo

Chrome does that on my Win7 PC, but I disabled them because it was redundant for me.
Windows 10 has so many neat features coming. It's a shame about some of the other shit, but it's overall a good OS imo

Pretty much this. I hated Windows 8, but that wasn't because it was a broken and shitty OS or anything, it was because it changed too much and fucked up my workflow. Hell, until I discovered there was a way to set the "File Explorer" button in the Start Menu to open up This PC instead of whatever it did before, even Win10 was a pita by comparison to Win7/
At least thrice a week my bar at the bottom of the screen goes black except for the start menu, which doesn't open. I have to restart a few times to get it to work again. I've checked for errors, system claims it's fine. Other than that it's okay?

I can say this on 8.1 vs 10;
I like 8.1 somewhat, but constantly have issues with passwords. When online, it asks to be unlocked with the newest password. When offline, I've had it ask to be unlocked with an older password. I'd like to have Metro gone completely, as no one that uses the laptop sees it as being useful - it just wastes time when you accidentally open it.
On 10; I have no issues when my connection drops in and out. Nearly every time I use my 10 computer, my internet is out for maintenance and 10 doesn't care beyond notifying me that it's out.
As long as you have no hardware issues, I've found 10 to be much smoother - especially after optimizations.
I'd recommend trying it again someday - just having Metro gone is an upgrade in my book.

so how exactly do I do this? I'd like if the file explorer button and the pinned folder button on my taskbar opened this pc

Open Explorer. Open View > Options. The first entry in the "General" tab is set to "Open File Explorer to: Quick Access." Change the dropdown to "This PC" and you're golden!
Pictures and such can be found here.
If any of you Linux people want something like this too, look into KDE connect. If you're lucky your distro won't present you with 20 pages of dependencies. You can also connect to your desktop with it too which is pretty neat.
Now how long until we get an Android Lumia?
Please don't torture me with that :suicide:
I had a lumia 910, and have had a motorolla atrix (not sure which), galaxy S3, and a note 4 since, and goddamn was that thing the best feeling handset I've ever had. The OS was pretty nice too, and would be amazing were it a wee bit more open.
it would be great if they had extended Android support natively so I dont have to use these apps to text from my computer

thats what they are doing here

You still need the Cortana app on your phone. It's not natively supported.

Most of its problems revolved around old shit conflicting with UAC, driver support for old shit and people who bought their computer in 1992 and upgraded all the way to XP had to buy new. And they had to buy something nice too, cause it ran like shit on the minimum spec.
I used it for 2 years and it wasn't that bad.
thats what they are doing here
I'd rather not use the Cortana app. I want to add my MS account on my phone and have it sync with my MS account for my computer. Notifications there, notifications here. Basic SMS/MMS integration would be great.

Disable Fast Startup. I've had it happen on my grandma's computer which is a non-UEFI system.
And yed they still dont have this functionality for Windows Mobile. It would be super useful to get a notification show on my surface or desktop if i have a text or call - Like the iPad does already

Hybrid boot can get your kernel in a fucky state somewhat easily with a BIOS based system, UEFI manages a lot of the hardware interaction much better for stuff like hybrid boot.
So yeah, if your PC is a bit old, you might need to turn that off. Should still boot faster than most Windows OS mind.
