When it comes to cramming as much data as possible on a platter, hard drive manufacturers will use every trick in the book to maximize capacity. Including turning up the heat as TDK plans to do with a new technique that could deliver 40 terabyte hard drives by 2020.
In layman's terms, it's actually easier to induce and reverse a magnetic field—which is how data is written and read in a hard drive—as the temperature increases. So TDK has developed a laser system to temporarily heat the area where data is being written, which in turn allows them to squeeze more bits onto a platter.
they're about to make 40TB HDDs but here I am still stuck with a 150gb hard drive
:suicide:
I don't think I could ever fill 40tb of HD space.
Hard drives will be outdated by 2020. They will fall behind in speed.
They should look into 40 TB SSD's.

When I first built my PC in 2007, I didn't think I'd need more than 250gb. Then I bought another 250gb hdd because I was mistaken the first time and this time I really didn't think I'd need more than those extra 250gb. Then I bought a 2TB because I thought it would be nice to be safe. Last year I bought a second 2TB HDD and I think I'll need a 3rd before the end of next year.
I could use a 40TB harddrive

i think my first computer only had a few gb of hard drive space. i remember when we got a new computer and it had like 50gb and i was like "holy shit think of all the games i can put on here!"

if you have a job that involves a lot of digital information, especially film, audio, or photography related careers, you can fill 40tb fairly quickly.
I'd rather see technology that makes hard drives more reliable.

It's called solid state drives. They just need to make it cheaper.

Unless they have a severe drop in price, a HDD will always be more practical. I would much rather pay $50-$70 for a 1TB HDD over the $600-$800 for a SSD of the same size.

There's no simple way of making SSD's cheaper, it's not going to happen overnight. Until then I just want a reliable HDD.

Just like HDDs, SSDs will be made affordable. Remember, shit used to be like this:

I've been running a $20 1tb HDD for almost three years now. It's just slow, that's seriously the only problem with it, otherwise it holds all my movies and games just fine.
It's just shit for an install drive because anything you install on it takes forever to boot up.

Hell just considering the new games that are coming out soon. I mean Cod ghosts is going to be like what 30 gbs? That's just insane for a cod game. I'd love a 40tb hard drive.
Enough to hold all the porn

you would probably need the NSA utah facility for that :v:

Preferably, before it burst into flames.
Bah, SSD's.
Gimme actually decent hybrid drives.
Fast AND shitloads of storage, come to poppa :quagmire:

I have a harddrive with the same front fascia plate.
Except the one I have is a 100MB drive.
I think it was made by Seagate.

And with downloading games digitally becoming more popular on consoles, the PS4 and X1 are going to run up their less than 1TB of space quickly so the first editions of the consoles are going to suck in the long run
Just to think not to long ago we used magnetic strips and tapes to record data.
ALL THAT PORN
seeing as 4k video is powering through, those things will weigh at least 200-300GB... this progress isn't as quick as the ultra-high media starts coming into play more.
I'd rather see technology that makes hard drives more reliable.
Reliable? Mine have been spinning for 6, almost 7 years so far, two 500gbs ones. I think HDD are quite reliable unless you're using a greendrive for your OS.
I don't think I could ever fill 40tb of HD space.
Iunno, I have two terras and I've gotten to the point where I have to delete stuff to fit new stuff in. I don't have any movies or a lot of music, either. As games get bigger and bigger due to higher texture resolutions and such, it seems quite realistic to be able to fill ~10 by 'casual' useage, and 40 for more hoarding/heavy users.
Just to think not to long ago we used magnetic strips and tapes to record data.
We still use tapes as legacy backup storage media, they last longer than CDs and HDDs.
The only negative to SSDs is they don't have as much data storage life as a hard disc. Depending on what sort of memory and usage you've put on the drive, if you leave your device unpowered for as little as 3 months you could experience data loss.
I don't think I could ever fill 40tb of HD space.
I remember my first 1GB drive and I thought that was insane, now I'm struggling to store all my shit on my 1.5TB of space. I have 8 times my first hard drive devoted to only porn.
Hell just considering the new games that are coming out soon. I mean Cod ghosts is going to be like what 30 gbs? That's just insane for a cod game. I'd love a 40tb hard drive.
Can't because it's also coming out on the 360 and I doubt AV is going to be putting it on multiple discs. And even if it did, it wouldn't be going past 15.
Ps3 games rarely got beyond that size either and that was usually only when they had massive massive amounts of videos (like MGSIV).
I'd say ghosts will be somewhere between 10-15 at most. And some intern who was making the min specs just noticed that 50gb was the size of a BR disc.
EDIT
Took a look at 360 COD games black ops II was apparently on two discs which did bring it to something like 14 gigs. I highly doubt we're looking at anything much bigger than that.
Good. Now lets find a way to improve SSD Capacity to these sort of numbers and increase there speeds even more.
In a few years time we may see SSD prices fall in line with prices for current HDD's too
who gives a shit about mechanical hard drives anymore
I could use a 40TB hard drive. There's so much stuff I can store on there without quickly running out of space.
