• DirectX 11.1 might not make it for Windows 7
Microsoft has no plans to bring the new DirectX update to Windows 7.

Every new Windows version brings with it a fancy new DirectX update. With Windows 8, it’s DirectX 11.1. Usually, Microsoft then ports the new update to its older Windows platforms, like it did for Windows Vista when Windows 7 came with bundled with DirectX 11. But it seems that the new Direct 11.1 update will remain exclusive to Windows 8. In a Microsoft Answers forum, program manager Daniel Moth stated that, “DirectX 11.1 is part of Windows 8, just like DirectX 11 was part of Windows 7. DirectX 11 was made available for Vista, but at this point there is no plan for DirectX 11.1 to be made available on Windows 7.” This is not a major concern for gamers, at the moment. DirectX 11.1 only features minor updates, and adds out-of-the-box stereoscopic 3D support. However, Microsoft could keep the next major DirectX upgrade tied to Windows 8, too, and with many reluctant to shift to the new operating system, this could be a major cause for worry for not only gamers, but also hardware manufacturers. As a gamer, will you be updating to Windows 8 anytime soon?
http://tbreak.com/tech/2012/11/directx-11-1-might-not-make-it-for-windows-7/ I wonder if this means no DX12 either. Eh by the time we need it hopefully Linux will be viable as a gaming platform
Just like Vista, they're using DirectX to force people into their shitty new OS. Next thing you know, they'll be convincing the big game publishers to make their new triple-A titles incompatible with 7. Anyone remember Halo 2 being Vista-exclusive until pirates figured out how to make it work on XP?
Despite me having Windows 8 that is ridiculous.

If they enabled DX11 for Vista, they could enable 11.1/12 for 7. They're doing this to sell Windows 8.
Man. Good thing that developers aren't even done using direct x 10 and are still using dx9
If they enabled DX11 for Vista, they could enable 11.1/12 for 7. They're doing this to sell Windows 8.
actually no, DX11.1 requires WDDM 1.2, which is Windows 8 only so now they can't port it
XP is completely dead why should they support such an old OS?
At the time, Vista was fresh out of the box, and Halo 2 was their ploy to make gamers switch away from XP. But, everyone ended up sticking with XP because Vista was shit.
Man. Good thing that developers aren't even done using direct x 10 and are still using dx9
not a good thing, performance is held back because of old API's that newer hardware only supports for backwards compatibility. We just need OpenGL to be used again
XP is completely dead why should they support such an old OS?
XP was still preferred over Vista at the time of the port to Windows (which was in 2007). Now if we're talking Halo 4 (if it ever gets a PC port), then that statement would make more sense.
So apparently a developer at DICE likes DX11.1 allot, and requested some of the changes DX11.1 has His tweet about it: https://twitter.com/repi/status/114017754201325569
At the time, Vista was fresh out of the box, and Halo 2 was their ploy to make gamers switch away from XP. But, everyone ended up sticking with XP because Vista was shit.
and because of that they never released another halo game on pc
actually no, DX11.1 requires WDDM 1.2, which is Windows 8 only so now they can't port it
I thought I'd do some quick digging just to learn something, and I ran into this:
Windows Vista introduced the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM), which allowed new features such as virtualized video memory and scheduling of concurrent graphics contexts. Windows 7 also uses WDDM, albeit a newer version.
This is referring to when DX11 support was added; http://www.dailytech.com/Directx+11+Now+Available+for+Vista+Through+Platform+Update/article16582.htm So now I'm actually confused. Did they update WDDM for Vista to make this possible?
Not really a big deal tbh. Direct x11 is usually a performance rapist on any game it's on.
XP is completely dead why should they support such an old OS?
with 7 on the market yes but i think it was acceptable to use XP during the Vista era
Not really a big deal tbh.
Vista is WDDM 1.0, 7 is WDDM 1.1, 8 is WDDM 1.2
If that's the case, does that mean that DX11 supported WDDM 1.0?
Not really a big deal tbh. Direct x11 is usually a performance rapist on any game it's on.
that's the game developer's faults, DX11 is much more efficient, and developers who use it right (like the Need for Speed developers) get 300% more performance basically the Vista fiasco made developers take any DX version past 9 as a gimmick, when DX9 is actually hurting PC gaming performance wise
If only there was another graphics API, one that was multi-platform, open and better than Direct3D. Oh wait.
If only there was another graphics API, one that was multi-platform, open and better than Direct3D. Oh wait.
Its a shame hardly any devs bother using OpenGL, or even porting to OpenGL. Because they see no net profit gains.
If only there was another graphics API, one that was multi-platform, open and better than Direct3D. Oh wait.
This is why Valve's push for Linux is important, MS has been public enemy # 1 of PC gaming for a long time, just cause they don't outright attack PC gaming doesn't mean they aren't responsible for many of its downfalls
XP is completely dead why should they support such an old OS?
Because some people still use it due to their computers being incompatible with 7 due to age. Like me :(
Because some people still use it due to their computers being incompatible with 7 due to age. Like me :(
if your computer is so old it can't run 7 then should you really be playing new games on it?
Because some people still use it due to their computers being incompatible with 7 due to age. Like me :(
get a job and build a cheap computer
Because some people still use it due to their computers being incompatible with 7 due to age. Like me :(
sry we're not wasting time supporting your decrepit OS just because you don't want to upgrade
Because some people still use it due to their computers being incompatible with 7 due to age. Like me :(
Get a job, seriously.. I have a couple computers just sitting around in boxes that are atleast 4x as powerful as your PC.
Just like Vista, they're using DirectX to force people into their shitty new OS.
Haha, what? The whole reason DX10 was Vista-only was because it wasn't compatible. Stop trying to be a victim over this shit.
Because some people still use it due to their computers being incompatible with 7 due to age. Like me :(
Chances are 8 supports it, it has the best hardware support and built in driver support of Windows to date, even my parents very obscure wireless card that 7 hated worked flawlessly with 8 out of the box
It's not like any of the developers are going to utilize it.. Everyone's still on DX9 because of console ports.
sry we're not wasting time supporting your decrepit OS just because you don't want to upgrade
If you can not afford to upgrade your computer, then maybe you should not be gaming anyway. All the money you save from not buying games would allow you to upgrade your computer. XP is 11 years old, its time to upgrade.
