A magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit central Canada this afternoon, rattling buildings from Windsor to Montreal and several U.S. states. The Toronto newsroom of The Globe and Mail shook just before 1:45 p.m. EDT. The Ottawa newsroom was evacuated at about 1:43 p.m. Environment Minister Jim Prentice was doing an interview with CTV at its Ottawa bureau on the 14th floor of the World Exchange Plaza in downtown Ottawa when the tremour struck. "I was on the air and suddenly my chair was moving," he said afterwards. "Fortunately I was at the end." The sidewalks quickly filled with workers who decided to evacuate their buildings. Twitter users as distant as Springfield, Massachusetts and Traverse City, Michigan reported feeling tremors. A Globe reporter in Montreal said that city also shook. The earthquake rattled buildings in Ottawa, where the streets are crowded with office workers who evacuated their workplaces. An eyewitness saw items flying off the shelves at a pharmacy in Gatineau, QC. “We felt the building shake. It was actually it was pretty serious. It was definitely the strongest quake that I ever felt,” said Dennis Choquette, a Globe and Mail online editor based in Ottawa. The shaking lasted about 15 seconds, Mr. Choquette said. The severity of the earthquake is not yet known. It is not yet known whether there have been any reports of injuries. That was crazy.
Earthquakes are very common. I love how people are disagreeing, I never said a specific place, 5.5 is very common. I also love how even though after I fixed my spelling error, I get another "bad spelling/
5.5 now constitutes as news?
I actually felt it. I was just reading through the forums when my desk and chair started shaking, I thought I was going crazy until my mum phoned and mentioned that she felt the same thing. I've only ever felt 1 other earthquake where I live before, and that was at least 10 years ago.
It was just a booty quake.
Felt the quake down here in Toledo Ohio, my co-workers were a little worried seeing as we are in a 10 story building that is over 100 years old.
5.5 now constitutes as news?
Its news because lots of Facepunchers live in Ontario, Quebec, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and quite a few of them felt it. Eastern Canada is usually not that seismically active.
Earchquakes are very common.
They're very rare in Canada and the Northern US.
5.5 now constitutes as news?
This is Canada mate, I'm 18 and this was the first earthquake I've ever felt.
5.5 now constitutes as news?
Earthquakes don't happen in Central Canada very often for your information.
5.5 now constitutes as news?
The area affected is quite a distance from fault lines.
When this happened, my Canadian friend almost instantly tweeted about it and wrote two facebook updates. :v: But, yeah, that must have been really weird for them to suddenly have one out-of-the blue. I don't think they get many Earthquakes up there.
It killed my cat :(
We barely get any at all... At first I thought it was a strong gust of wind but then I kinda figured it out.
5.5 now constitutes as news?
There's never earthquakes this strong up here! Plus, the buildings here aren't built to be earthquake resistant so living in a tall building I was a bit terrified at what the shaking was doing to the structure..
It killed my cat :(
what a catastrophe. [sp] I'm sorry about your cat :([/sp] (User was banned for this post ("This isn't what spoiler tags are for" - Benji))
There was virtually no information on this literally half an hour ago. Seems like a fairly odd occurrence, to say the least.
i felt it, im not home in a hi rise building we had to evac the place.
earthquakes happen 24/7 here in BC, Most of them you dont feel but they are there.
I live between Toronto and Ottawa and i have never felt an earthquake in my 16 years of life.
I live between Toronto and Ottawa and i have never felt an earthquake in my 16 years of life.
Same Neither should I have put my old CRT at the top of an old wooden shelve :(
earthquakes happen 24/7 here in BC, Most of them you dont feel but they are there.
High five BC bro
I felt it here. Just outside Detroit, MI. I was going up my stairs and they started creaking louder than a witch's scream. Then they started shaking. I freaked the fuck out because in my 19 years here, I had never felt one.
Here's the epicentre Montreal Island at bottom right.
I live in Hamilton. All of a sudden everything in my room started shaking. My monitor and shelves started moving back and fourth. All I thought was "Shit. Earthquake."
It killed my cat :(
Who the fuck rated him funny?
Who the fuck rated him funny?
Theres no way that small an earthquake can kill a cat. More less, who in their right mind would be "oh, an earthquake killed my cat, imma run to facepunch and tell them" Coming here would not be the first thing on your mind. Especially if it just happened. Just my opinion.
I definitely felt that, I bolted out the door and out to the street as soon as it started getting serious.
Felt it in Maryland.
