The man was expected to survive. After stopping, Canipe got out of his pickup truck and reached into the bed, pulling out what Knox thought was a long-barreled rifle, Faris said. It was Canipe's walking cane. The officer fired several times, hitting Canipe once, Faris said. Faris refused to say where on his body Canipe was hit, but said he was expected to survive. Canipe was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., where spokesman Kevin McCarthy said he was listed in fair condition.
I mean it's kind of dumb the guy reached into his truck and grabbed something but I don't really see how a cane looks like so much of a gun. If a cane looks like a gun then you would probably get shot for pulling out anything that looks like a tube. Reminds me of the recent story of that kid who got shot and killed for holding a Wii remote.
and no doubt the officer is going to get off scot free
Well, at least the guy was okay. I feel like the officer didn't need to fire several times, though. ...I mean, he obviously didn't need to fire at all, but still.
he didn't just reach into his truck to grab something he grabbed his cane. The officer is a dumb ass
Well, at least the guy was okay. I feel like the officer didn't need to fire several times, though. ...I mean, he obviously didn't need to fire at all, but still.
As far as I know, double tapping is standard procedure.
Not that I'm defending anyone when I say this, but it's generally a good idea to announce what you're doing to the officer before you just go and do it. Keep your hands visible.
The old guy probably has shot hips (figuratively) and grabbing his cane when leaving his vehicle is a natural reflex. If it is as bad as my grandfather, then he probably can't even stand up without a cane, lest he want to feel a painful sensation equivalent to having a large knife jammed into his thigh.
he didn't just reach into his truck to grab something he grabbed his cane. The officer is a dumb ass
Not that your sentence made sense but the officer isn't a dumb ass. Not that I know the circumstances but its easy too see how he could have made that mistake in the heat of the moment.
depending on how he grabbed it (how fast, the way he held it) and what the cane looked like, i can totally see why the officer would mistake it for a rifle
It's just the way things are these days - people are afraid of police, and the police are afraid of the people. If the government didn't use the law as a tool for their interests we wouldn't be having quite as many problems like these.
I'm not saying what he did is right--but I mean, consider how awfully wrong traffic stops can go very quickly. It's 7:30 PM, so it was probably dark (correct me here if it was still light out, but it's 7:30 right now where I am and there's no sun), and a guy goes down to grab a long item that could be mistaken for a weapon. Warning: Very unsettling traffic stop results in officer death: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=e91_1324341647 I mean, that video gives me chills, imagine having that in the back of your mind--the possibility of that, especially older men who, typically, aren't as willing to listen to cops, especially if they're veterans.
are police officers just trained to shoot-first-ask-later these days or something? whatever happened to non-lethal weapons? granted, the old guy was also partly to blame because he didnt tell the officer he was reaching to get his cane, but at least no one died this time

You do not use nonlethal force on someone using lethal force on you. I'm sure our Facepunch resident cop or someone can go into the specifics or elaborate
jesus christ those screams are going to haunt me
I'm glad I muted the video, now. On subject, it says that he reached into the bed of his pickup truck to get his cane, which seems like a very odd place for a walking cane to be kept. It's an odd place for a gun to be kept, also, but having the cane in the bed of the truck rather than right by the door or in the other seat seems kind of weird.
and no doubt the officer is going to get off scot free
Honestly in this situation he should get off scot free. I guarantee the man didn't inform the officer he was going for his cane, which has an uncanny resemblance to a rifle.
Why was the old guy even out of the car? You never get out of a car unless told so by the officer.

Not that you shouldnt with these triggerhappy morons around. But thats a problem that should be put on them, not on the victims you twit.

the officer shouldnt be punished. its dark, he sees a man reaching for something tubular and long like a rifle or shotgun and he acted accordingly. and "shooting too many times" is no such thing. theres plenty of people who can survive a single gunshot wound and you're trained to double tap at center mass anyway. But it could've been a Sword Cane for all the police know! Better watch out for those 70-year old men with canes, they could slice your head off in one slow strike.

They bring a gun out on you, you are automatically allowed to kill them.
the dinkheller video is p much mandatory for all cops in training to watch btw mr cop correct me if im wrong tia
It was shown in my academy among many other videos. It's actually the first thing that came to mind when I saw this story.
It's not exactly standard procedure to unload into someone the second you see them grabbing an object.
An object that can likely be easily mistaken as a rifle? They even called 911 and followed the guy for a bit, but once they saw it was an umbrella they just told them never mind and left. Not really sure why that guy was carrying an umbrella over his shoulder on a sunny day.
