When Nintendo released its Wii U console in 2012, it included a little feature that promised to "transform how people find, watch and engage with TV shows, movies and sports." It was called TVii, and it even got its own dedicated button on the Wii U Gamepad. Now, less than three years later, Nintendo is pulling the plug.
Good. Now the Wii U can focus on its games and not try to be "an all in one entertainment system" :ok:
I don't think anyone used it anyways.
I've never bothered to use it. I can't say I even knew what it actually did.
Didn't think anyone really used that thing. I only used the TV button thing to control the volume, about it, at least they're leaving that.
I use my game pad as my remote during the many times I can't find my tiny Samsung remote.
i only used it to get to the input screen.
i had that button, but couldn't even use it here
nice job nintendo
Note, this has nothing to do with the TV button on the gamepad. This is a service the Wii U provides, completely seperate.
I used it once, it was pretty cool though not cool enough to ever touch again :v:

Good, As long as I can still use the tv remote function, they can kill TVii with no complaints from me.
TVii never got the right channels for me anyway.
It was weird that they announced it through a Miiverse post.
My most memorable moment with TVii is that it spoiled a twist for an episode of AoS 5 minutes before it happened with a viewer poll on the app.

Well, Miiverse is Nintendo's social network, and they don't have an established blog. Why is it weird?

It just feels like it should have been a system notification over a Miiverse post. Nintendo Video on the 3DS got several reminders before it went away in North America, way in advanced compared to this.
Feels like they are trying to bury it quickly instead of saying goodbye to a feature.
Never even heard of it
Yeah, no one really used this. There was potential in some of its features, but its interface was just way too rough to make it worth using. A shame, because it was one of my most looked-forward-to features before getting a Wii U, but it was just... blugh. And they never bothered updating it, either.
On the other hand, the remote built into the GamePad - that thing's golden.
I hate the trend that consoles need to have all these features.
I have a computer for my internet, netflix, all that other stuff.
When I buy a console I want it to do one thing; play games.
I want the simplicity of putting in a CD and having the game appear on my TV without any other bullshit, that's the appeal to me.
My PS3 broke, got refurbished for 100 fucking dollars, broke the next day, got sent a completely NEW PS3 which ended up getting the yellow light of death a few months later.
On the other hand I have a NES, Sega Genesis, N64, PSX and a PS2. They all still work perfectly.
This is why I will never buy a new console.

Most people prefer to have television shows/movies on their TV or don't have computers right next to their TV? Having everything you would want included in one box is incredibly convenient for the consumer. No need for 50 different devices to do 50 different things if you can just bundle them along with your video game console.
i do like how the consoles all have Netflix and amazon instant video, as that is 80% of their use in my household especially since we don't have any fancy smart tvs or anything like that

I prefer to have my television shows/movies on a TV but I don't use a console for that. Nor do I have a computer anywhere near my TV, entire different floor actually.
I'm kind of glad, these type of "watch your cable shit here" things made all the internet streams which were previously ad run on their websites go down. Like adult swim went behind these paywalls for a few years and finally emerged last year after it turned out nobody used their convoluted account sign in service
[editline]27th July 2015[/editline]
These fail because of the scummy cable models not the platforms
i tried setting it up during the superbowl
it never worked
I honestly loathe the TV Control button. God knows how many times I've accidentally hit it when trying to shut the console off.
The WiiU had a TV option? I've had mine forever and I never knew that
Honestly with the Wii U, if you're watching tv and have the gamepad on, you're playing a game. It was a cool thing in idea but it was just a gimmick.

Yeah TVii is a weird community app.

Meanwhile the only reason I still use my PS3 is because it can do Netflix, YouTube, and play my DVDs and Blu Rays. If I'm dropping hundreds of bucks on a device for my living room I'd rather it do it all than just play games.
[editline]27th July 2015[/editline]
Also I'm sure your PS3 would've failed even if it didn't have Netflix installed so I have no idea where that little rant came from.

I never said it died because of netflix, fucking what? lol
I was comparing how new consoles are flimsy as fuck and more likely to shit out than older consoles are
Was this like the Xbox One where you can use it to watch cable TV with a set top box or did it just work as a TV remote/guide?

It was a TV guide where if you were watching something, it would give you trivia and polls.
It also let you use the Gamepad as universal remote.

Yes, but how is that related to consoles having more features? You mentioned the two concepts (new consoles have too many new features, and your PS3 having hardware failures), in the same breath so I assumed that you thought that one caused the other, that somehow additional software makes your console more susceptible to hardware failure.
