It's like Ico all over again.
Some of those were a stretch. Crash Bandicoot?

It's like Ico all over again.
American advertisers or publishers or what have you hate artistic box art. They think they make less money from a game with artistic or minimalistic box art because you don't show the characters or what the game is about, it's like they think we are stupid. Whoever has the job to decide what the boxart is for america, they are fucking cunts and should kill themselves. It's just a big fuck you to the artists who put thought into the games cover to make a statement about the game.
Japanese art is has a lot of focus on landscape, nature, and style, so Japanese boxart usually is stylistic and commonly has nature, like the Ico boxart above. American art traditionally has more focus on the people involved in the depicted event so the characters are more prominent on the boxart.
idk the ICO boxart looks pretty fucking cool IMHO same with MGS4 the american one i mean
the american ico boxart is actually infamous for being horrible
Funny because I was actually considering buying Ico when I saw it on shelves and read the back, but the box art made the graphics look like old 90's CGI so it put me off and never got it.
The american box art looks like it's a generic adventure game featuring a young boy beating the shit out of things with a stick trying to save a girl in a standard fantasy environment. The big open expanses of the european box art combined with the relatively small sizes of the people depicted reinforces the idea that the player character and companion are in a situation that is several magnitudes larger than them. At least that's how it reads to me, I actually played ICO around the time it came out and while I never finished it [sp]the shadow people scared the piss out of me[/sp] it was just saturated with this awe-inspiring enormity of what you were trying to accomplish. Same as Shadow of the Colossus, really.
That ending reminded me a lot of Tim and Eric. Which is awesome, they're always pretty funny too.
Fucking hell, as opposed to the layout of all the other comparisons (American right, EU left), ICO is reversed. Yeah the European version looks fucking legit sorry for the confusion.

Maybe it's just because I have the special Ico/Shadow of the Colossus HD version for the PS3, but the Ico cover they used is the same one on the right for me.
