A revolutionary court in Iran has jailed eight young people for a total of 127 years for anti-regime posts on Facebook, local media reports. The eight, whose names were not given, were jailed for "acting against national security, anti-regime propaganda and insulting religious values and Iranian leaders", the reports said on Monday, without elaborating. Those convicted came from Tehran, Yazd, Shiraz, Abadan and Kerman, and were each imprisoned for between 11 and 21 years. They can appeal against the sentences. Access to social networks, including Twitter and Facebook, is routinely filtered by Iranian authorities, as are other websites considered un-Islamic or detrimental to the regime. President Hassan Rouhani, a self-declared moderate, has promised greater tolerance on social, cultural and media issues - a vow that helped him defeat conservatives in last year's election. But his fledgling push has been opposed by traditionalists and ultra-conservatives who hold sway in the establishment and key institutions including the judiciary. In May, eight people were sentenced to jail terms ranging from seven to 20 years for crimes including anti-regime propaganda posted on Facebook, the opposition website Kaleme reported.
http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/2014/07/14/iran-jails-youths-facebook-posts
Man that's fucked. Doesn't Iran still have public beheadings? Or is it just Saudi Arabia?

How dare they speak out against the regime.
total of 127 years
Just me or writing this is totally stupid since sentences for different people don't stack?

One of his best clients was an Iranian man named Siavash. He was a fairly wealthy businessman by all accounts and used to dote on my older sister, as he had two young daughters of his own about her age. Over time, dad and him became very close friends and he used to travel to India as often as he could and bring us some interesting stuff. My family wasn't rich by any means - in fact, we were so dirt poor we had to by ceiling fans on EMI and both my sister's baby clothes and cot and cradles were hand me downs. Then one day after about two years since he first met Siavash, he stopped coming and dad received a notice in the office from the man's brother in law that he had "passed away" suddenly, and that was that. Dad was very surprised that his friend would do that or had any health problem of any sort (in fact, he was very athletic and he used to play tennis a fair bit so it was even more suspicious), and finally, when I was about 2 years old and after a big argument with mom who was worried about him, he traveled to Iran to find out what happened to his friend. Turns out he got on the wrong side of the Savak, Iran's secret police. They broke down his door in the week hours of the morning and dragged him off to their HQ. He was hung, but after being tortured brutally. His entire family - his wife, his daughters, just disappeared off the face of the earth and the brother in law refused to tell my father any further for fear of being killed. The brother in law shortly after immigrated to the US and Dad lost touch with him. My dad somehow feels it's his obligation to find them and help them, but he feels they might be dead and after knowing what happened to his friend he doesn't want to know anymore.
Does anyone have a link to the anti-establishment posts the teenagers made? Would really like to see what gave them such severe punishments.
They're starting to harass people who make anti-government posts in our part of the world openly as well. And the fringe groups who get offended will be after your blood if they find out who posted anything attacking their own sensibilities. I'm honestly terrified of this. edit: The fringe groups have already claimed a casualty. A Muslim IT Professional who posted something against our current PM.
