• Registration is disabled?

Okay, I have a feeling that I'll get banned for posting this because it's probably completely obvious that I'm not seeing. Anyway.. My friend wants to register and he can't, "registration is disabled by the administrator" for him. is this website-related or did someone actually disable registration? when will it be back?
This question is better asked in the "ask us about the forums" thread.
This thread was opened. I wonder if registration really is disabled [editline]18th February 2013[/editline] No one has joined since yesterday, so you may be right [editline]18th February 2013[/editline] For the last 10 days we've only had 2 or 3 people register per day, before that it was a couple dozen a day
Facepunch is now the most exclusive no-girls-allowed treehouse in the world.
Registration has been closed for about a week. I don't think we need any new members right now.
Once a year we just get all the best members and breed them. Unfortunately there was inbreeding and now you have the Facepunch community as you see it.
Registration has been closed for about a week. I don't think we need any new members right now.
Is it because of the massive amount if spam bots we've had recently?
Is it because of the massive amount if spam bots we've had recently?
It's mainly all the spergers that keep re-registering. But this stops the spambots too so it's all good. It's something we need to figure out really. I definitely don't want to charge people to make an account - even though that would solve all the problems. Maybe we need to vet each join somehow.

People jump on the users page, click some kind of "I approve of this user" button and when the user has gathered enough approvals from the community they get full posting abilities. Lets Facepunch have a bit of control over who they want hanging around.

The user must answer all 5 successfully to be given full posting abilities, if the user answers a question wrong he must wait a period of time before being able to take the test again. Make the questions either common knowledge or stuff which can easily be answered with Google.

Perhaps something like smartness, but with points to people whose votes are approved?
Or make a reverse refugee camp where new users can post to convince admins/mods they're legit and be granted full access. or you could apply ScottyWired's idea and allow legit users (at least 1 year registered/Gold Members) vote so that new users are authorized.
maybe autoban for obvious spam keywords?
Possibly, but maybe there should be a reward to motivate people to vote whether a person should stay or not. It adds a sense of amusement and reward because then we can use those points on changing our own titles/usernames OR changing others.
maybe autoban for obvious spam keywords?
autoban has been used in the past, while it made me snigger at times, it didn't work.
autoban has been used in the past, while it made me snigger at times, it didn't work.
No as in obvious spambot words or stupid usermade spam threads like the badage boys.
autoban has been used in the past, while it made me snigger at times, it didn't work.
Grammar points are a good example. If you used anything that wasn't English you would get negative points.
^ that's more of the old smartness system than autoban
As far as spam bots go, a forum that automatically permabans you and deletes all your posts for posting in would stop bots that post all over the forum.
^ that's more of the old smartness system than autoban
Pretty sure it autobanned after awhile. It was like 4 years ago.
Pretty sure it autobanned after awhile. It was like 4 years ago.
If you lose too much smartness yeah.
make it so when people register they have to lurk for a week before they can post
As far as spam bots go, a forum that automatically permabans you and deletes all your posts for posting in would stop bots that post all over the forum.
So a Comedy Hurr Forum that perma bans you if you post in it BTW, that's what should be called [editline]18th February 2013[/editline]
make it so when people register they have to lurk for a week before they can post
This too. You could make it that you can't create threads, post links, post picture or post media during your first week. Alternatively, we could have a introductions forum where you have to tell everyone about yourself and then need a certain amount of approvals before getting to use the rest of the forum

My system is to make sure that legit users get a feel for the forum before getting set loose.
Possibly, but maybe there should be a reward to motivate people to vote whether a person should stay or not. Perhaps something like smartness, but with points to people whose votes are approved?
I got inspiration for a new competetive system from that post. A karma number gets attached under the postcount, and all the ratings that the users get will be tied to that number. -I approve of 'User A' and 'User A' gets lots of funnies/winners, my karma goes up. -I approve of 'Dumb fag' and 'Dumb fag' gets lots of bans and boxes, my karma goes down. This will encourage users to only approve of the best looking newcomers. Also creates a faint sort of 'guidance system' where maturer users will give advice to users they approve.
Or make a reverse refugee camp where new users can post to convince admins/mods they're legit and be granted full access. or you could apply ScottyWired's idea and allow legit users (at least 1 year registered/Gold Members) vote so that new users are authorized.
The moderators don't need any more work. Besides, you won't get any newcomers to the more niche areas by doing that. Giving approval rights based on posting age would probably work.
maybe autoban for obvious spam keywords?
Define what an 'obvious spam word' is.
make it so when people register they have to lurk for a week before they can post
This could work
This could work
Wouldn't be too hard to just stockpile alts and bring them out when you want to troll. I can imagine some retard in LMAO pics with ten backup accounts.

Maybe make it so new accounts have to enter a CAPTCHA with every post they make up until 100 or so posts. No one wants to go through that.
