FRIDAY, July 15 (HealthDay News) — One way to avoid overeating at your favorite restaurant may be to order bigger cutlery, a new study suggests.
When eating out, people who used a large fork for bigger bites ate less than those who used a smaller utensil, according to findings released online in advance of publication in an upcoming print edition of the Journal of Consumer Research.
In conducting the field study in an Italian restaurant, Arul Mishra, Himanshu Mishra and Tamara M. Masters, all of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, provided two sizes of forks to modify customers’ bite sizes. The researchers found that diners who used large forks ate less than those who were given small forks.
The reason for the discrepancy, the study authors suggested, is that people who eat out have a well-defined goal of satisfying their hunger. This makes them more willing to invest energy and resources to meet that goal, such as making menu selections, eating and paying the check.
“The fork size provided the diners with a means to observe their goal progress,” the investigators explained in a journal news release. “The physiological feedback of feeling full, or the satiation signal, comes with a time lag. In its absence, diners focus on the visual cue of whether they are making any dent on the food on their plate to assess goal progress.”
The research team put their conclusion to the test by varying the portions of food. They found that when served larger portions, diners with small forks ate significantly more than those with larger forks. In contrast, when customers were served smaller portions, the size of their fork did not affect the amount of food they ate.
The study authors pointed out that their findings apply to restaurant customers only — not people eating at home who may not have the same goals of satiating their hunger as restaurant customers.
To avoid overeating, the researchers suggested that people learn to better recognize and understand their hunger cues and how much food they should eat.

true story
I eat until my stomach says "Maximum Carrying Capacity Reached" and then refuse to even have a drink for fear of throwing up. I'm not like a lot of people who feel compelled to eat everything on their plate simply because its there. Food is not an "All or none" situation. You can go "I'm done, this is enough for me, any more and I might turn in to that fat guy from Seven." But I know plenty of people who feel like, because there is still food on their plate, they absolutely must eat it. But another thing that keeps me from being a 400 pound greaseball is that I don't order eight things off the menu. I order an entree and thats it. The most I'll do for an appetizer is a bowl or plate of tomatoes, and I haven't had an after-dinner desert in more than ten years. And I don't get four different sides. I just take exactly one.
But then there are people like one friend of mine. We are at an Outback Steakhouse, and this guy orders a 26 ounce Melbourne, eats it to the point he is actually gnawing on the damn bone like a dog, eats half a Bloomin' Onion, and then eats another eight ounce filet. And not thirty minutes afterwards, he is bitching about still wanting food. But somehow this guy weighs only about 160 lbs. I couldn't even finish half of my eight ounce filet and the fries I had before I felt like my stomach would explode.
i eat everything cause i dont like wasted food
Different metabolisms Doctor zedacon. Im lucky that like your friend I can eat whatever the fuck I want and still be skinny.

I still don't see how that is possible at all though. How can a person eat a cumulatively 34 ounces of meat and half a bloomin' onion in one sitting and then still be hungry not half an hour later.
I always use big utensils and just shovel it in.

I don't know how he was hungry but I can eat a ton of junk and not gain much weight, not that I weigh myself. I've had the same size for years now with no consideration to the junk a consume.
I love food more than most people.
And I don't mean that like there are people who love food less I mean that like I enjoy being in the company of food more than being in the company of people.

Great idea, don't buy this from the Lard and Grease Sports Bar and Grill three times a day like a large chunk of obese America does.

Of the many I've been to, only one was acceptable. The rest serve burnt food that either lacks taste or taste exactly like how the food shouldn't.
that's why you never go to a sports bar to eat food
I don't know how he was hungry but I can eat a ton of junk and not gain much weight
that's nice
that's why you never go to a sports bar to eat food
I don't like sports though either, but my friends apparently have stomachs made from nuclear waste storage units and they like sports. And so when I'm with them, I will eventually get hungry and be forced to eat something before my body begins consuming itself.
Hunger is an interesting thing.
Read up on this experiment:

This would only result in you being full quicker, but you'd be eating the same amount. It's just taking a few big bites instead of several small bites. It doesn't make a difference.

just because you don't gain weight when eating junk food doesn't mean it's not unhealthy

It actually does. Being full is very dependent on psychological factors, read my post above yours.
