I'm looking to buy a bong but at the moment I only have budget of £10 and I've never used a bong before so I want a half-decent one to try first.

Yeah, I know, but for £10? If I were you I would save up some money and buy a better bong. Just make your own waterbong for now. Or if you know someone that's got one, maybe you could buy it from him/her? Sucks not having a creditcard for online purchases, I know...
Try going and getting one of those prepaid credit cards. You can usually pick them up at a convenience store or a bank.
I live in Norway, so stores who sell weed merch are nowhere to be found. But I actually found a bong in a store who sell cigars and such, so look around. Maybe you'll find something. :350:
For 10 bucks that is a good enough deal.
My suggestion...
If you or your rents (or someone you know) has a small drill set go down to your local donation store (ARC, GoodWill, those kinds of stores) and shop around their glassware sections. Look for pieces that fit together. You need a body piece (So more roundish and wide) with a neck piece (Skinnier, taller. Look for something that'd be comfortable to put the mouth in/around). You'll want to make sure both pieces fit together. So the neck piece should fit comfortable and fairly snug into the top open end of the body. Make sure not to find glass thats way too thin. You want the glass to be strong enough to withstand the drilling.
Once you've got your pieces you'll need the following:
1x roll of black electrical tape
2x Glass Pieces from donation store (Neck and Body)
1x electrical drill (using a bit with a pointed head)
- Water (use luke-warm, You'll need running water. Not still)
- Lots of patience
Starting with the neck and using the electrical tape secure an area on the bottom of the glass ([url=http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/720/vasediagram.jpg]like this[/url]) if you can, both inside and out exactly over one another. Once done, using a faucet set the water to luke warm and then using the drill SLOWLY begin to drill in the space between the tape. If you run the drill too fast it'll overheat the glass and cause it to [b]shatter[/b], you don't want this. So start slow and keep the water running on the vase where you're drilling (not ON the drill. Don't want to electrocute yourself!)
If successful you should have a little hole in the bottom of your neck now. We're half done.
NEXT.
Take the base and along the side perform the same electrical tape procedure we did before. Here we're going to be making the hole for the stem. Repeat the above processes until you have a hole in the bottom of the Neck and a hole a little more than half way up the base piece.
With hole in the base you're going to want to wrap electrical tape around the sharpened edges of the hole. Keep the hole exposed but add the tape to make fitting the stem easier and preventing cracking/shattering.
Now fit the two glass pieces together. If you've got some non-toxic and water-safe sealant use that. Otherwise, make use of your handy dandy electrical tape and stick the two pieces together, don't skimp on the amount you use. This things gotta be water-tight and hold together when you pick it up from the neck. With this done Head to a glass shop and pick up a stem. Here in the US (Colorado) they're only a few bucks. Bring it home and try to slide it into the hole on the base, making sure to be careful and gentle. If it doesn't fit pull the tape off and try to expand the hole until it does. (if you've got a bigger drill bit use that. Trying to 'shave' the glass can be disastrous if you're not experienced. When the stem finally goes in, electrical tape the fuck out of the outside to keep it in place.
Buy a bowl piece and voila you now have your own water pipe. Fill it with water and give it a test run.
I've also seen people paint their new pipes to give them a prettier look.

To make a water bottle bong, you'll need:
A rigid tube of some sort, like part of a pen
Blu-tac
A lighter
and of course, a water bottle, preferably 2l.
Using your lighter or other methods, make a ~1.5cm hole about 3/4 of the way down the bottle. This is gonna be the thumbhole.
Burn another hole about an inch further down on the opposite side of the bottle to the thumbhole. This one needs to be big enough to fit the tube through, at an angle.
Make sure the tube is angled as high as possible, the other end reaching as low down the bottle as possible. This will prevent water splashing up the tube and wetting the spliff.
Then secure it with blutac.
Fill it up with warmish water to just before the hole (It doesn't REALLY matter to what level as long as it's below the thumbhole, but if you didn't make the tube watertight then you'll get a leak which isn't fun.).
Roll a joint and stick it in the end of the tube, secure it with blutac half-way down the roach so you can take it out when it's finished rather than having the roach fall into the tube.
And there you go, your very own bong. I'll post pictures of mine if you need help

When you are melting the whole with your lighter, melt it only so that you need to push your Tube/Base through the whole very hard (without braking the tube/base ofc), it ends up being air tight, no worries.

I had to use blutac because the pen had one of those clip things which would make it not airtight. And yeah, the thumbhole being close to the water-level made it work better although there is an increased risk of spilling when you give it to a first-timer or whatever.
Yep, that's why I also burn the thumbhole near the bottleneck.

It works much better with the thumbhole by the waterline. If you manage to get the pipe hole watertight then you can fill above it and have the thumbhole by the waterline.
