• Copright holders want to have netflix ban VPN users
f copyright holders get their way it will soon be impossible to access Netflix though a VPN service. The entertainment industry companies are calling for a ban on privacy services as that opens the door to foreign pirates. With the launch of legal streaming services such as Netflix, movie and TV fans have less reason to turn to pirate sites. At the same time, however, these legal options invite people from other countries where the legal services are more limited. This is also the case in Australia where up to 200,000 people are estimated to use the U.S. version of Netflix Although Netflix has geographical restrictions in place, these are easy to bypass with a relatively cheap VPN subscription. To keep these foreigners out, entertainment industry companies are now lobbying for a global ban on VPN users.

If implemented, this would mean that all VPN users worldwide will no longer be able to access Netflix. That includes the millions of Americans who are paying for a legitimate account. They can still access Netflix, but would not be allowed to do so securely via a VPN.

According to Bush the discussions to keep VPN users out are not tied to Netflix’s arrival in Australia. The distributors and other rightsholders argue that they are already being deprived of licensing fees, because some Aussies ignore local services such as Quickflix.
But I just got netflix god dammit. And quickflix? From what I know, it's just low resolution crap with hardly a library. The only other option is Foxtel or pirating, and I don't think many people are going to want to sign up to Foxtel. wait so legal services that let people stream licensed media are now considered piracy!? fuck lets just all give up
"it will soon be impossible to access Netflix though a VPN service" lol
So they would rather that we pirated the content instead?
With the launch of legal streaming services such as Netflix, movie and TV fans have less reason to turn to pirate sites.
Yes, especially considering how Netflix removes tons of movies whenever contracts expire and doesn't have very many TV show episodes from what I've seen.
Yes, especially considering how Netflix removes tons of movies whenever contracts expire and doesn't have very many TV show episodes from what I've seen.
Hulu probably has more than Netflix in all honesty.
Yes, especially considering how Netflix removes tons of movies whenever contracts expire and doesn't have very many TV show episodes from what I've seen.
As an alternative to piracy/ripping your own movies, Netflix is pretty shitty. My personal movie collection doesn't delete itself from my hard drive at the random whims of rightsholders.
Ya, sounds (not even) good on paper, but it the technical side, there will always be ways, good luck trying to block any VPN/routing method ever.
Fuck off. All content licensed to netflix should be worldwide. No more "you can watch X in this country but you can't watch X in this country but you can watch Y instead!"
Yes, especially considering how Netflix removes tons of movies whenever contracts expire and doesn't have very many TV show episodes from what I've seen.
not their fault, the media companies don't want to ever negotiate with them since they're all in bed with hulu
Hulu is a joint venture of NBCUniversal Television Group (Comcast),[6] Fox Broadcasting Company (21st Century Fox) and Disney–ABC Television Group (The Walt Disney Company),[7] with funding by Providence Equity Partners, the owner of Newport Television, which made a US$100 million equity investment and received a 10% stake.[8] In October 2012, Providence sold its 10% stake in Hulu.[9]
from wikipedia
Hulu probably has more than Netflix in all honesty.
Doesn't Hulu have the problem of showing commercials on a service that people are already paying for?
I'm just gonna throw it out there that NONE of the streaming services in Australia are any good. Quickflix barely applies as competition, as does Foxtel's shitty derivative (480p streaming lol). But anyway, using a VPN to access Netflix and calling it piracy is fucking ridiculous. Just because I'm from another country shouldn't mean I shouldn't get access to certain films because of some horseshit licensing.
way to go and encourage further piracy and get rid of a potential market.
"it will soon be impossible to access Netflix though a VPN service" lol
yeah lmao i'd like to see them try to distinguish the difference in traffic. what? i need a us credit card to register or something soon? already bypassed that for US itunes store.
Doesn't Hulu have the problem of showing commercials on a service that people are already paying for?
I'm pretty sure the ads on Hulu have gotten longer and longer, and their pay service doesn't even get rid of them...
Why do I get the idea that we're never going to move past this until our current forms of entertainment media are irrelevant, and the entertainment industry dies as a whole?
I'm pretty sure the ads on Hulu have gotten longer and longer, and their pay service doesn't even get rid of them...
plus from what I've seen an ad blocker will remove the ads but out of spite the page will still take the breaks and sit on screen asking you to unblock them with a countdown waiting for how long the commercials would have been anyways it's like they know they cannot prevent it so its set up to waste your time instead
Fuck off. All content licensed to netflix should be worldwide. No more "you can watch X in this country but you can't watch X in this country but you can watch Y instead!"
different companies handle licensing per country it's how it's always been
different companies handle licensing per country it's how it's always been
I forgot, licensing is a mess.
Is it so hard to just distribute the same films everywhere in the world? The movie industry needs to get on with the times.
With the internet there is no excuse for releasing things differently in different countries. Like why do movies and games still come out on different dates for different countries? And why the fuck can't I watch American shows from the UK if I'm paying for it? Really makes no sense to me at all.
"global" ban Ahahahaha
"global" ban Ahahahaha
Watch as they accidentally block all users.
Yep, lower quality than our SD TV broadcasts.
and somehow even lower quality movies/shows on offer.
Why is a customer in say bulgaria less legit than a customer in the US Money is money, I thought that's why they were into the industry in the first place.
Why is a customer in say bulgaria less legit than a customer in the US Money is money, I thought that's why they were into the industry in the first place.
They like to squeeze as much money out of people in different regions just because they can. High prices in Australia may once have been justified when everything was shipped there physically, but in the Internet age they still get ripped the fuck off despite it not actually costing more to let people download or stream things from there.

DRM and licensing is one of the things I hate the most, it's pure horse shit. I set up a US proxy a few days ago and started watching some stuff on the US Netflix. Not a huge change but enough to keep it interesting. Hell the site even recognised me as having travelled to the US and mentioned that content might be different. Funnily enough there's content on the UK version which is missing on the US so I do swap between the two. The only difference is I'm effectively paying an extra $5 for the DigitalOcean droplet running a Squid proxy. I would happily pay a bit extra to get the whole library. It must make some kind of business sense somewhere or they wouldn't be doing it.
So they would rather that we pirated the content instead?
Of course, how else are they meant to prosecute people for millions because they've downloaded a film.

Maybe don't have such crap laws HMMM???? [editline]18th September 2014[/editline] people are doing this because the laws are stupidly harsh and restricting content for stupid reasons.
