Host Emily Maitlis outlined the problems the Government is facing as Brexit negotiations began this week: May lost her majority, the DUP has still not agreed to any deal to prop up the Tories in the new parliament and EU leaders are “laughing at us”.
Leadsom disputed this and then said: “Of course it’s early days. It would be helpful if broadcasters were willing to be a bit patriotic.
“The country took a decision. This Government is determined to deliver on that decision.”
Dumbfounded, Maitlis interrupted: “Sorry, it’s unpatriotic? Are you accusing me of being unpatriotic for questioning whether you have the position of strength that she said she wanted?”
Appealing to the Daily Mail readers that now make up the Tory's main support base.
Not at all worrying to hear a politician claim that holding the government to account is unpatriotic
Ah patriotism, feeling proud and celebrating the country you were born in merely for the fact that you happened to be born in it.
Truly this false and hollow ideology fits the hollow logic behind Brexit.
It's totally unsurprising that this kind of maneuvering is what the tories would fall back on, when things go wrong they blame other people, 100% of the time, without fail. We've already heard that 'no deal is better than a bad deal', preparing us for when they fuck up negotiations and we're forced to accept nothing as a victory.
It's all deflection and it's all spin, because they don't want people to criticise their objective failings, so they try to simplify it and make it like football. We couldn't get a good trade deal because the EU hates us so we're taking no deal and we're bold and strong for doing it. It's us against them and if you're against us you're unpatriotic and the enemy.
This just sounds like a woman trying to give you medicine you don't want
For the past fucking year all the politicians have been saying "we need to work together as a country and get on with the work" despite showing no actual fucking results in the past year.
Jesus fucking christ. An absolute shambles.
Yeah no I'd rather the media try to be as unbiased as possible than be "patriotic".
This is the Tories equivalent of Jeb Bush going "PLEASE CLAP"
Yeah BBC, flush your gleaming reputation for impartial and factual reporting down the shitter so the government can pretend they're not fucking everything up. Go on do it, it'll be a laugh, they'll probably fuck up even harder.
isn't it more patriotic to want the best for you country than uncritically agreeing with the government???
when a government starts asking people to be "patriotic and get behind the government" you know they're grade A fucked
haha no, none of this "patriotism" shit and trying to rally your brainless support base through the tabloid rags. Uncritically agreeing with your government is a great way to ensure they can get away with anything.

They don't even have such a gleaming reputation anymore, they were caught having pro tory bias in the last election, but that bias isn't enough when your party is this fucked.
I'd feel more patriotic if the population didn't vote for something so idiotic.
Hey kids! You know what makes the taste of voting against your own self interests better?
A hearty dose of BLIND NATIONALISM!
Patriotism means scrutiny and taking responsibility of bad decisions
She wants less of that
The Irony of being accused of not being patriotic enough by the party looking to gut everything that makes Britain great for personal gain.

Idiotic yes, but you can't deny that most didn't even know what they were voting for.

And I bet most still don't.
If giving us the correct information and being brutally honest about the mess that Brexit is and will probably cause is unpatriotic that's fine with me
Patriotism and blindly supporting causes because of what they once where or rather once stood for is fucking idiotic
I just don't think there's anything left to feel patriotic for in this country, thinking of even taking a news sabbatical on a permanent basis. Nothing gets me more patriotic than reading about the ten billionth time Corbyn starts the next International and how many drinking games are made on Theresa mentioning strong and stable. We'd all like some clear news about what direction we're taking and where we are heading. That would do a lot towards helping patriotism because then we'd have a reason to actually support what's going on.

It is scary but very common. There is a difference between patriotism and nationalism and she is talking like a nationalist.
