As voters in three more states cast ballots to allow gay marriage in last week's election, some California gay marriage activists have grown impatient at seeing gains elsewhere while the question remains in legal limbo here. But as soon as this month the U.S. Supreme Court could consider whether to review a federal appeals court decision that overturned Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that banned gay marriage in California. If the high court decides not to review the 9th Circuit Appeal's decision, gay marriage could begin in California before the end of the year, advocates said. If the court decides to hear the case, the question could be decided next summer. The court could also prolong the waiting by holding the Proposition 8 case until it reviews rulings on the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Jon W. Davidson, legal director for Lambda Legal, a gay rights organization, said that whatever the court does, the election last week demonstrated that public opinion on same-sex marriage is moving in favor of gay rights. "This will send an even clearer message to the justices about which way the winds of history are blowing," he said. Opponents of gay marriage dispute that, arguing that the four states where gay marriage was on the ballot last week were all liberal-leaning places. Voters in Maryland, Washington and Maine approved legalizing gay marriage. In Minnesota, voters rejected a proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Gay marriage is now legal in nine states and the District of Columbia.
Gay
This is so dangerous, mostly because I have no idea which way the Supreme Court will lean. Absolutely no clue.
I'm surprised it isn't already legal in California
-snip wrong topic-
I'm surprised it isn't already legal in California
Marriage has been determined to cause cancer in California. This has caused serious ethical concerns.
This is so dangerous, mostly because I have no idea which way the Supreme Court will lean. Absolutely no clue.
That's a good thing, is it not?
I'm surprised it isn't already legal in California
California has super rich pastors with mega churches. The pastors even have meetings with politicians or radio hosts to promote anti gay voting (like my local mega church had Gov. Rick Perry and also Glenn Beck as speakers) they helped fund prop 8
Sucks that I live in one of the more conservative areas in California
Sucks that I live in one of the more conservative areas in California
Some area of San Diego?
Some area of San Diego?
No, I'm moving back there as soon as I graduate lol Central valley
That's a good thing, is it not?
You're right to say that you don't want a supreme court to have a political bias but to be honest it's not a political issue and if they don't approve it it's just discrimination.
Some area of San Diego?
Afaik most areas in San Diego I know of are pretty blue-leaning.
If the Court doesn't review the case now, then they may have to as there are 2 other gay marriage cases floating up to the Court. The conservatives may try to get it now while they still have a sort-of majority, because they'll definitely lose it before 2014.
I wonder what their arguments against gay marriage would be.
Afaik most areas in San Diego I know of are pretty blue-leaning.
As a whole the county is red-leaning because of its more affluent areas (read: old rich people) that are strongly conservative. It was almost disgusting how many Santorum bumper stickers I saw in my neighborhood.
I wonder what their arguments against gay marriage would be.
'slippery slope', 'dolphins', 'our lord saviour christ' etc
How is gay marriage not legalized in California yet? We have San Francisco.
Everybody who voted yes on Prop 8 should be shot. Twice.
Everybody who voted yes on Prop 8 should be shot. Twice.
Still blaming the mormon vote on that one, I'm sorry they just pushed way too hard for that one.
