Sup Facepunch, just got an mail about SOPA and PIPA being cancelled...
Simon, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid just announced that he has delayed a scheduled January 24 vote on the Protect IP Act (PIPA). He had to postpone the vote because millions of activists like you had convinced enough senators to vote against it to guarantee that it would be defeated.
Also this morning, House Judiciary Committee chairman Lamar Smith announced he is indefinitely postponing any consideration of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).
We just won. While we need to remain vigilant about internet censorship bills cropping up in different forms in the future, for all intents and purposes we have defeated both SOPA and PIPA.
Two months ago, it seemed like a longshot to stop either of these bills. Just last week, only five senators were opposed to PIPA. However, millions of Americans came together to speak out against internet censorship, and their collective voice carried the day.
Thank you for everything you did to stop SOPA and PIPA. Please, take a few moments to savor this victory.
Keep fighting,
Chris Bowers, Daily Kos
P.S. If you like the way winning feels, please chip in $5 to support Daily Kos. With your help we can get a lot more of these victories in the future.
THIS is an e mail I've got... I'm to tired right now so it's up to you guys to decide if it's true or not. I've got the mail saved if anyone want a screenie for proof...
good riddance
Postponed, not stopped.
Does anyone else have a source on this, or would this be bullshit? I don't want to make up my mind too soon.
As much as I want to believe this, I remain suspicious.
yeah it only says delayed not cancelled.
And all the problems of the real world remain.
Not gonna cheer yet until it's completely gone.

You can't really "stop" SOPA or PIPA. Even if they banned the name and text, just give it a different name and rephrase the wording a bit and you can just come up with an equivalent. You can't forbid these people to consider laws about piracy or website takedowns either, so how would you stop SOPA?
Indefinite postponement is the best you can get IMO.
It'll be back, just wait.
have people forgot about ACTA?
to be honest, i think its far worse then sopa/pipa. not only it ruins internet. But food, medicine and piracy.

also the lobbies may be able to simply copypaste SOPA/PIPA into the PCPA (protecting children from pornography act) IIRC
it's their backup plan, SOPA was just designed to raise noise

Good thing is, it's not too late to raise awareness of that possibility, either. I wonder if Americancensorship knows about that one, too...

Unfortunately, there will always be people trying to censor the internet. The battle to keep our righteous internet away from government interests is a never-ending battle, which is why we always need people on the front lines fighting it day and night.
That thing was like an anal itch that just kept getting worse and worse, then one day it was just gone.
Damn it, it looks like I brought my party hats and SOPA DIES T-shirts too early..
people are silly if they think completely removing sopa from this planet will remove the problem
guess what. if sopa and all those other acts get stopped it changes jack shit. everyone who wrote those bills and everyone who supported them still has their jobs and still has their money. give it another 2 years and we'll have another sopa-esque crisis. you don't have to look back far in history to see the last time this happened (hint: 2008, DMCA, PRO-IP. 2011 ACTA)
Megaupload still went down without SOPA.
Some e-mail i got from "Demand Progress"

Friend,
Wow. We just won.
From the Associated Press:
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he was postponing a test vote set for Tuesday "in light of recent events."
So, in other words, because of all of us. Absolutely amazing.
Demand Progress has been fighting this legislation for more than a year -- having grown from nothing to over one million members during that period.
We rely on those members to fund our (2-person) operation -- are you able to help out?
Please click here if you're able to chip in 5, 10, or 20 bucks so we can keep on fighting for Internet freedom.
Even the Motion Picture Association's Chris Dodd is awed by what just happened. Here's what he said yesterday:
“This is altogether a new effect,” Mr. Dodd said, comparing the online movement to the Arab Spring. He could not remember seeing “an effort that was moving with this degree of support change this dramatically” in the last four decades, he added.
Thanks so much for your work on this. Will you consider a donation to Demand Progress so we can keep up the fight the next time the Internet comes under attack?
Please click here if you're able to chip in 5, 10, or 20 bucks so we can keep on pushing for Internet freedom, civil rights, and civil liberties.
You're amazing.

Alright bro you can stop asking for my money now
you're not gonna get it, I don't even have any
So, don't fuck with the internet, people.

So, this'll be a constant tug of war/cold war.
Why give up, we held them back this time, we can do it again.
Wow, looks like 2012s news highlight is Internet destruction
They're probably going to postpone it until they think it's under the radar, the sneaky bastards...
Exactly what I was thinking. Its got too much attention from everyone and the media so they delayed it. Just gotta keep giving it attention and they will drop it.
If only everyone would do this for all the stupid stuff they try to pass. Continual public attention would deter them from constantly trying to sneak bad things into bills.
Lamar Smith "It is clear that we need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products."
