Where’s a colander when you need it?The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has finally been recognised as a religion in The Netherlands.
Two days ago, pastafarians were told by the country’s Chamber of Commerce that they would be granted official status. They had been trying for several years.
Although a momentous time for the church of FSM – this is not the first time the church has been officially recognized.
As we speak, the amount of people visiting the churches for the spaghettimonster is rapidly increasing in the Netherlands.
I've always felt that the FSM fad is a whole "look at us we're atheists" thing. I don't think that it's that impressive that the Church of FSM is recognized as a church, as you could basically create a religion about anything. However, I feel like it's using that as 'prove' that religion is dumb? That's the feeling that I get from the Church of FSM.

My point being, this doesn't prove anything other than that you could create a religion about anything.
It always starts as a joke or fad, but then some people take it seriously.

Yeah i want to add that this is not being taken that seriously, these guys who set it up here in the netherlands purely did it to prove some kind of point.
The church sessions look like this:

Now that's a service I can get behind.

It's to prove that, at least legally in this context, that the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has as much legitimacy as other, more popular religions. The FSM exists to satirize other religions, particularly on the scientific front.
Atleast they have some good beer.

I still don't really get which point that is. Is it to laugh at religion?

Basically, they just invent their own and state that they really believe in this and the government can't say no because then it would turn out that they government is censoring their religion and they could attack back with "why is Christianity allowed then????" and so on and so forth.
This basically began with someone in the Netherlands recently wanting to take a photo and the local government said that he cannot wear a colander on his head while he defended it for being "a part of his beliefs" and this sparked a bit of a struggle, eventually he was allowed to make a picture with the colander.
I find this kinda funny, they are not harming anyone and after reading up the wiki i find their "beliefs" entertaining. Examples:
- The lack of pirates in this world is the cause of global warming.
- Instead of "Amen" you say "Ramen".
- The true chosen ones of the religion wear a fully fledged pirate suit.
- Every Friday is a national religious holiday for them to drink beer.
- Ending up in heaven grants you access to volcanoes of beer and stripperfactories which supply the Kingdom with unlimited strippers.
A bunch of fat neckbeards wearing colanders, that sure shows religious people how dumb they are!

It is a form of satire intended to highlight some issues with organized religion.
It started in the US as a method for countering the inclusion of creationism in school curriculum.
By having the FSM religion officially recognized, they can better combat these sorts of things when they appear.

It's a very good proof that having a government accept "official" religions is ridiculous and not limited to actual religions.
Case in point: Scientology in the US. It is a bona fide religion according to the government (IRS) because there is no real system for determining such things. And that's the real point. The FSM thing was invented by a professor who was opposed to teaching evolution in US schools. He cynically agreed with the measure but added that they also teach the FSM creation myth alongside the Christian one. FSM can also be applied in cases where people claim special exceptions for their religious costumes or prayer times or days off or whatever else. If Muslims can wear certain types of clothing for government photos, why can't I wear a strainer on my head because my noodle god told me so? It's just as irrational, and the government cannot start deciding which types of doctrine are acceptable and which are not. That's is the purpose of the spaghetti monster thing. So in a sense, it is there to "'prove' that religion is dumb." Because it is.

It's a bit more than satire. It's a sort of weapon that secular people can use to poke holes in the web of religious intrusion into public life. It's the same thing as the Satanists who wanted to erect a statue outside of that Oklahoma courthouse. Pursuing the same line of logic that religions do will lead to spectacularly ridiculous results, and it's very easy for people to notice this when it's an unfamiliar myth or obvious satire (case in point with the Oklahoma Satanists thing: they were doing the exact same thing that the Christians did and nobody was buying it).

Or rather: Religion deserves no special treatment in society at large or by the government.
Not everyone is christian or muslim, so why should I be waked up by bells or a morning prayer? For this thing I sure hope the FSM movement invents their own excuse for making loud annoying noises fuckshit early in the morning.
My point being, this doesn't prove anything other than that you could create a religion about anything.
That's the point, it's a joke religion, except it's a tongue-in-cheek self-admitting one.
Also a protest in favor of separating state/government from religious institutions.
But feel free to believe it's all edgy atheists, since you already started out with that viewpoint.

Calm down, I'm merely stating my impression of FSM. I'm asking for people to provide some viewpoints that could prove me wrong.
In regards to it being a protest about separating state/government from religion, I don't think we have a lot of issue with that here in the Netherlands.

In the Netherlands not so much, it's just kind of a funny thing they did because they could. Also there's nothing wrong with reinforcing the idea. It's somewhat a big deal in the United States because there are a vast majority of people with negative views of atheism, or who scratch their head and go "???" at the concept. Calling it a fad is kind of insulting when it's a way to kind of stick it to organized religion which still holds a lot of America firmly in it's grasp.
A bunch of fat neckbeards wearing colanders, that sure shows religious people how dumb they are!
And people like this who think anytime any atheist ever speaks out or tries to do anything related with atheism, they're just a fat neckbeard or an edgy kid trying to stick it to their parents.
I wonder when the Church of Steam will happen, since Gabe is worshiped a bit too much.
I still don't really get which point that is. Is it to laugh at religion?
Basically by achieving the same status as other religious organizations they are making a statement about how silly religion really is. I'd say it's a clever and subtle way of discourage people from taking religions seriously.
