A fire at a shopping centre in the Qatari capital Doha has killed at least 19 people, eyewitnesses and local officials say.
They said 13 of the victims at the Villagio centre were children.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
The Villagio mall is one of the most popular shopping and recreational complexes in the small Gulf state. Its facilities include a cinema, hotel and theme park.
Very disturbing to hear that happening. I lived down there for 10 months and the place seemed very secure. Heading down there again on the 5th of June.
Reading up at DN it seems that the sprinklers malfunctioned? Apparently the children were at the nursery there..
I guess they were having some blazing hot sales.

I hope you die in a fire.
Whats so funny, WaterdotzofSS2?
13 people just died in a blaze.
10 minute drive from my house. Doha's a tiny place so everyone knows each other, friends of friends and friends children were killed in this. Nationwide tragedy because we're just not used to things like this happening, Qatar's always been kind of a bubble from crime and mass death in general. 13 children, 4 teachers and 2 brave firemen died today in the fire.

No one cares about adults, children are the majority here so that's important.
If anyone cares, Qatari residents are trying to get #RIPVillaggioFireVictims to trend on twitter so we can expose the shitty safety precautions taken into account when building these malls, and hopefully be an example to other countries and places. The nursery was upstairs and only accessible by elevator. They had to drill through a wall to save as many people as they can. Tragic. If you want to do your bit, please do.
The fires started in a children's nursery inside.
Dangit ninja'd

Short fuse sparked a fire under the nursery, not inside.
Whole day ruined. :gonk:

Most of the malls are built as quickly as possible with the cheapest manpower (read: Indians and Filipinos working for QAR 50 a day). I'm not really surprised. I guess that sprinkler systems would "ruin" the entire faux sky inside..

Well labour unions are being formed to protect the workers but the fact that there's no assembly point, no fire drills, no plan. Nothing. The ministry of interior just said "@MOI_QatarEn: The Minister declared that a higher committee will be formed to follow the matter of safety requirements at buildings." which is good but should have been done sooner.
How the fuck do so many people die from a fire in a mall?

I don't get Facepunch's obsession of making horrible puns in a thread about some sad news to gather ratings. What's the point?

Some people would rather smoother sad feelings with happy ones? I'm fairly certain it's a natural reaction for some.
How the fuck do so many people die from a fire in a mall?
I have to agree, did it just get out of control before anyone noticed it?
I guess the lack of alarms and sprinklers didn't help.

I care about adults

Also, this is absolutely tragic. It's always bad when tragic things happen in places like nurseries.
-snip fuck that i learned my lesson from last time-
