• More Formatting/BB Code Tools for Posting on Facepunch

All though this may seem a little bit more like useless bickering, I was wondering what exactly is preventing Facepunch from having better post formatting tools, akin to other forums/boards on a similar webkit. I am not sure on the exact date, but Pre-2012, FP'ers had a wide-array of posting tools such as font size, alignment, highlighting, different quote bars, and ect. All of which were used quiet frequently by people on multiple boards to make rather formal and informative posts. One example of this can be seen on [url=http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1266322]the Facepunch Gun Club thread(XI)[/url], in which the OP used a great amount of [h1] and [h2] tags to highlight certain topics and things regarding the thread. Another example of formatting tools being put to use Pre-2012, was in the [url=http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=910381]Firearms V. Super Redneck Edition[/url] thread which was formatted in such a way to include information for newbies to firearms. Now I am not sure exactly why these formatting tools and codes were removed in the first place, but is it possible to have them readded? If yes on that, can we possibly see some other tools added as well? Maybe being able to align posts, screw around with fonts, change the text color and size... Just really about anything which would give a decent set of tools to work with compared to having barebone text with quote bars and code bars.
i just know one of the reasons (probably a small one though) was that people were abusing them outside of context, trying to be funny etc. not really that good enough of a reason to remove all of them imo, but what can you do. sucks too because you could make threads look real good and proper with them
I just want alignment back. Centering OP's makes it look so much better in most cases.
[QUOTE=Waffle cones.;45362409]garry removed them back in 2013 after some dude in gdi found a bug that would fuck up the page when the tags were used in a certain way instead of banning people who abused it and deleting their post he decided completely getting rid of it would be the better way to go about it since people mainly used it to format OPs [URL="http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1292390"]"which is dumb"[/URL] this is around the same time he banned ask us about the forum threads, and made threads have a 25 page limit in an attempt to make us a "real forum"[/QUOTE] Ah Garry. "If you can provide a logical reason for those tags to exist they will come back." "Here are several logical reasons for the tags to exist!" "Lol I don't agree with your reasons and I'm the boss so fuck you all you won't get your tags!"

I found out how table tags caused the entire page to break - we called it the GDi theme. That doesn't explain Garry's reasoning for removing [sub], [sup] and [h1] / [h2]. Especially as I saw a sticky by Garry himself containing a [h2] tag. If the forums can't exist without them then they will shrivel up and die and it will be my fault. You should probably make your own forum where you can use tables and subscript - because it is so integral to your usage of a forum# They're not coming back. If you want to retire your account because of it just say and I will remove it for you.[/QUOTE]
The GDi threadbuster (still have source) only used tables. Subscripts and superscripts were randomly removed with them, and H2 was removed a while ago.

I would honestly be alright with someone making a replacement for Facepunch.
[QUOTE=wauterboi;45364765]I would honestly be alright with someone making a replacement for Facepunch.[/QUOTE] Problem is it easily turns into a ciclejerk (e.g. that GDI forum one permabanned user made, can't remember their name)
I just want some more community control as opposed to what Garry wants. Frankly, I hardly care about Garry and I'm not sure that most other people care either. It would be rude and unreasonable to demand things from Garry which makes me think having a separate forum would be better. I'm one for simplicity, so having a plethora of unneeded tags are annoying. However, when you sacrifice usability for simplicity, you create frustration. Whether or not Garry dislikes megathreads, there's still a ton of them in pretty much every subforum on Facepunch. Formatting the first post to contain useful information and resources would be useful, but alas, there are no tags. I don't think that we need anything crazy - just the [h2] tags would be nice. I've never been one for coloring text or anything like that and I'm on board with keeping posts as close to just text as possible, but Facepunch isn't a terminal. We can and should give a little readability to posts. To Garry, however, anything that requires anything fancier than what we have now is the wrong way to post, which is why I implore for him to remove all megathreads for consistency. This includes, but is not limited to: Garry's Mod WAYWO, TF2 Emporium, Model Porting Thread, LMAO Pics, etc. They don't fit his criteria of what an ideal forum should be. Then again, I don't really care that much. You learn to deal with Garry or go away.

Someone should hit up compwhizii and get the labs back online
I'm reporting you guys for treason. Der Führer Gary will not be impressed by your antics.

I use the advanced post bar that you can toggle in the settings. It still has stuff for tags like sub and sup, both of which have been gone for a long-ass time.
[QUOTE=code_gs;45365150]Cowabanga[/QUOTE] He bought me gold. Was nice of him before he devolved into an asshole. On-topic...I really do miss proper OP formatting. People still try to format OP's now, but the tools were nice and made it look prettier. Now it all generally looks the same.
GDi theme used table classes to fuck shit up. That's where the issue was. A good solution would be Markdown as an alternative to or a mixin with BBCode. It's more controlled and much cleaner anyway. While we're at it, maybe we could get some LaTeX math tags. Garry's a busy guy, though. If a forum modification takes more effort than changing a config variable, I think it'd take too much time away from his other projects.
I would absolutely love it if Markdown was used. It would make things so clean and formal.
So is it possible that something like this might happen? Also, another thing that has been on my mind... Why exactly was the scroll bar for ratings removed?
What was that one tag, like [release] tags or something like that, it was like quote tags but a tan color? I remember those. Whatever happened to those?
I think they got removed when most of the Something Awful stuff got pulled down. I really hope that stuff makes a comeback. Would be really nice to have all the emotes, tabs, and formatting tools back on Facepunch again.
on the note of "things from somethingawful" what is the point of this if you can't see what the overall rating is [img]http://puu.sh/aI6iH/04d5fc8f3c.png[/img]
