Shark attack reported in Cape Cod; one man bitten on the ankle
A man was apparently bitten on the ankle by a shark while swimming at Ballston Beach in Truro this afternoon, police said. The injury is not believed to be life-threatening.
The man swam to shore and was taken from the beach to Cape Cod Hospital after a 911 call came in about 3:30 p.m., said dispatcher Martha Wheeler of Truro police.
Wheeler said witnesses reported seeing a shark fin, but police could not confirm its presence.
The beach, which is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, remains open, Wheeler said.
Wheeler said authorities did not know the man’s name or where he was from.
The Truro harbormaster’s office was closed. The National Seashore offices were also closed.
The apparent shark bite comes after several summers of worry about the great white sharks that have come to the state’s shores to feast on seals, a favorite meal for the giant predators. The sharks have been most frequently sighted off of Chatham.
Chatham is at the elbow of the Cape, while Truro is towards the outer tip of the Cape.

This is just going to spread more irrational fear of sharks.
I mean 3,000 people were statistically likely to have been killed in car crashes. Today.
Not to shit the thread up.
But isn't this more along the lines of local news?
This is hardly sensational

Shark attacks are very rare so not really just local.
I would have waited a while to post this though. They still don't know what the fuck actually happened yet.

Legion of sharks ravage Cape Cod; one man permanently disfigured in horrifying attack.

I hope OvB witnesses the jeopardy his human-shark alliance has placed these fine citizens in.
BREAKING NEWS: Shark nibbles on man's leg before deciding to swim off. "I thought those marks were because of his new dog", says neighbor.
Is it time to begin a crusade on sharks? John McScurvy, Senior Shark Faux-analyst, with more on the matter.
"Yarr, gut 'em all, says I" says John.
I never understood people who freak out about sharks. You're unlikely to be bitten, they don't actively seek out humans. You can also avoid them by not walking into the deeper water.
People don't freak out when a lion kills someone walking around sub-Saharan africa, why freak out about sharks in the fucking ocean.
It's a shame that this guy got bitten, the shark was probably confused and took a bite to examine him (in it's crude, sharky way).

shark attacks are rare enough I'd say they can be big news

Big news: Man walks into apex predator's natural habitat, is shocked he got bitten.
Great Whites come to Cape Cod to feed on fat sea mammals. If a Great White wanted to kill you, you wouldn't be walking off the beach. Though this has been quite a bad season for shark attacks. Though we should consider ourselves lucky. Like I said, they feed on fat lazy mammals. Beaches are full of fat lazy mammals.
An unknown man was bitten on the ankle by an unknown shark.....so many words later "worry about great white sharks" is brought into the mix. No hysteria there, no sir.
I used to go to Cape Cod every year during summer this year is the first year I skipped the Cape.

Jaws made the Great White famous. I think the daily mail even has a picture of a Great White as the standard shark related image for their headers. I've seen a story like: "MAN ATTACKED BY MAN-EATING SHARK, BARELY WALKS AWAY." with a GWS picture. After reading the article it was more equatable to: "Man stubs toe on resting nurse shark. Get's bitten as shark is fleeing. Needs a few band-aids"

I'm a terrible person :c

Also, something seems odd here: They say it might have been a great white... but they only come up there to eat seals. Meaning they need to be large enough to eat a seal. If you got your ankle bitten by a shark capable of cutting a seal in half, you shouldn't have a foot left. Though sometimes sharks will bite something gently then come back with full attack force once they commit to the kill, so this shark obviously didn't want to eat him.
Where's that drunk Serbian lad when we need him? :/
