The owner of a supermarket chain must pay Michael Jordan $8.9 million for using his name and promoting a product in an ad without his permission.A jury deliberated for six hours before handing down the verdict Friday night in federal court in Chicago, where Jordan won six NBA titles with the Bulls. Lawyers for Safeway, owner of now-defunct Chicago-based chain Dominick's, said Jordan should be paid $126,900 for the use of his name in a 2009 ad Dominick's placed in a commemorative issue Sports Illustrated published for Jordan's induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. But Jordan's lawyers and Jordan himself testified that his endorsement history suggests he would not have taken that deal.

"I'm pleased with today's verdict," Jordan said in a statement. "No one -- whether or not they're a public figure -- should have to worry about their identity being used without their permission. I wonder what charity this will go to.

I feel as if everything I write has to be devoid of any reference or similarity to anything that exists in reality, due to copyright and trademark law and for no sensible reason.

I mean really, maze runner, hunger games, divergent, they're very similar to logans run, running man, and those weren't even fully original when they were written [editline]22nd August 2015[/editline] At least it's for charity

Most of the time, we see what already exists and try to put our own spin on it, a different coat of paint, a new hat, etc. But while there's so much style without substance, and so much stuff without style, the right combination of things can seem like a real thing, that comes along once in a while.

El dorado being one example. Basically the story of some foreigners, often white, going to a land of 'primatives', and convincing them they are godly, only to be cast out.
What is the ad itself? The article wasn't clear and the video in the article didn't seem to show it (had audio off though so not 100% sure).

I'm sorry but why would you need the copyright after your death even? You're fucking dead.

Still seems like a ridiculous amount to sue for.
