EA seem set to introduce optional microtransactions into Dead Space 3′s campaign. Eurogamer spotted mention of downloadable content in the game’s crafting screen, suggesting that the sci-fi shooter won’t just rely on the series’ previous resource gathering tactic of stomping mutant corpses into a thin paste. Attempt to craft a weapon add-on without the required materials, and the game will display a message saying, “Cannot craft. Additional resources required,” along with a hotkey allowing players to purchase them as DLC. When asked about the in-game transactions, Dead Space 3′s associate producer, Yara Khoury explained, “You can buy resources with real money, but scavenger bots can also give you the currency that you can use on the marketplace … So you don’t have to spend [real world] dollars.” On the possibility of the game letting players immediately buy there way to the game’s best weapons, she added: “There are a lot of weapon parts that are only available to buy later in the game. Unless you’re playing through it again [on New Game Plus].” No pricing details are available, but Khoury suggests that multiple packs of currency will be available, each retailing at a different price point. Mass Effect 3 had a similar system, allowing players to purchase, or unlock, crates containing new characters, weapons and bonuses in the game’s co-op mode. To my knowledge, this is the first time such microtransactions will have crossed over into one of EA’s single player campaigns. Expected
I think I might just rent the game find someone to play co-op with or play solo and give it back after 5 hours after playing the main game and save my self $50
No... NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
What the fuck
jesus christ. If you pay full price for a game, why should you have to pay for the shit inside the game? It's like buying a burger but having to pay when you take a bite and get some of the lettuce. [sub][sub][sub]shut up it's the best I could do[/sub][/sub][/sub]
what the actual fuck.
Ea ruining one franchise at a time
Fuck you, EA. Fuck you.
Way to ruin one of the only few decent game series you had left, EA. Bravo. just bravo.
Honestly this is no different then them selling crates in ME3 You don't need to buy them to get them, but if you wanted to you could just buy a bunch of crates hoping you got what you wanted It's still stupid that they are honestly trying to do microtransactions in a fucking game they are selling for $60 anyways, and not to mention Dead Space 3 isn't any larger or expesnive to run/make than any other game that is released this generation. But it's not like this is "microtransactions" in the sense that you pay to win or anything. It's just like ME3 where you get these things normally by playing but if you want to cheat you can pay (imo still stupid). The only way I'd be cool with this is if the game was cheaper to make up for it, if the game had some kind of big persistant multiplayer element that meant running the servers for it were expensive (like what they do for GW2), or the game was simply so big that $60 couldn't recoup enough of the dev costs.
I think I might just rent the game find someone to play co-op with or play solo and give it back after 5 hours after playing the main game and save my self $50
I have a feeling they're gonna do that bullshit online pass crap.
Excellent for EA. Hopefully you can go down and die after fucking every franchise and closing every game developer that actually tried to appreciate and listen to the gamer's that bought the game and loved it. Everything you've been doing is fucking up the game developer, worst yet is simply just saying that we'll need microtransactions and/or DLC and then give the script to the game developer to say it so that it looks like the game developers fault. Fuck you, EA.
Nickel and dime business tactics only deter me from wanting to buy the game.
So how many of you just read the title, shut down all critical thinking capabilities, and just smashed your faces into the keyboard until a EA related insult came out? The article itself states you don't require real world money to use this, there are items in the game that provide the "credits" required to purchase the items if you need them. Microtransactions aren't an issue unless you make them an issue, developers have learned that players don't like having no option but paying, as evidenced by most games with microtransactions in them.
I have a feeling they're gonna do that bullshit online pass crap.
if I can't rent or get it used I'll just wait for a sale or wacth it on youtube I am not paying $60 for this crap
Talk about overreacting.
Guess I'm not getting this game, then.
Wow, they're truly making this the scariest Dead Space game yet. Imagine your credit card bill! Imagine the pricing! THE HORROR.
Talk about overreacting.
Yes I saw the part where don't need in real life money to buy stuff you can use in game money as well but still I am not paying $60 or more for this unless it take's 20 Hours plus to beat
Why are they making such a huge deal about this game the last 2 weren't even that appealing imo Remember when EA actually cared about its customers?
It sucks they're adding this, its a terrible idea. I mean, the rest of the game is surprisingly solid based on what I've played, and its not like Gears of Dead Space 3, but the last thing this game needed was even more damage to its image... [editline]22nd January 2013[/editline]
Why are they making such a huge deal about this game the last 2 weren't even that appealing imo
The fact that Dead Space is one EA's best currently running series is a testament otherwise.

sure am glad i dont know anything about this series or else i might have gotten mad
sure am glad i dont know anything about this series or else i might have gotten mad
You're kinda missing out, then. The first game's one of my all time favorites, and though there's people who bitch about it, the second is FUCKING GREAT, too.
sure am glad i dont know anything about this series or else i might have gotten mad
or if you care at all about the state of the video game industry and/or what game design is microtransactions for a full price single player/co-op game are entirely unnecessary.
It seems like anything EA does these days is just piss its customers off. But the masses will still flock to it
but what is the fucking point? why not throw out all game design choices and just make everything optional microtransactions? don't have the materials needed to craft? you dont need to go find them if you pay for them. don't have the best weapon? dont bother unlocking it, just buy it. final boss too hard? just pay to beat him.
Well done, taking a feature to the absurd. That'll totally show me how microtransactions ruin games. Slippery slopes don't happen. Using them as a basis for your argument is retarded, and you should feel bad. Microtransactions aren't a "replace all" kind of feature, they never were, and never can be. They were something devised to let people enjoy their game to the full when they don't have hours of time to spend looking for things, or don't like performing backtracking, pixel hunting, you know, tedious acts. You can't replace every aspect of a game with a microtransaction unless the actual game itself has a meaningless reason to complete it (see Skate "Time is money" DLC, the game has no reason for you to actually play it to find things, so you can waste your money to get everything instantly). They are in place to let users who just don't want to deal with tedious actions enjoy their game. If they want to waste their money on the microtransactions, let them. The idea of a microtransaction has been around for a while now, and it still hasn't consumed games whole yet. It's probably receded in recent years to be honest, largely found in F2P and Pay2Win games.

Its not like this is eventually going to turn into "PAY $1 TO SHOOT BULLET"
or if you care at all about the state of the video game industry and/or what game design is microtransactions for a full price single player/co-op game are entirely unnecessary.
Optional microtransactions for games are unnecessary, but guess what? So are games as a media! In fact, everything but food and shelter are unnecessary. But if we restrict this to just game design? Well, they aren't necessary, but do they actually hurt your gameplay experience if you don't need to buy them to progress? No? Okay, they aren't hurting the industry then.
