'Something unexpected' is happening on the Sun, Nasa has warned.
This year was supposed to be the year of 'solar maximum,' the peak of the 11-year sunspot cycle.
But as this image reveals, solar activity is relatively low.
Nope, its gonna be allllllllright.
maybe it has anti-spot treatment
it's obvious
the sun is going to burn out like a used lightbulb, and we're going to have to send a team of astronauts up with a fresh one

Bye guys.
DAILY MAIL
yeah rip
The Daily Mail should avoid reporting on Science news if they have no idea what they're talking about.

you mean a farmer couple with a pink dog, right?

lets give it a 15 year light bulb this time
Daily Mail?
Yeah we'll be fine.
This is the sort of stuff that happens with sunspots.

It puts things into perspective when you realize how much raw power is going on in a reaction like this.
And that's just a tiny section of the entire sun.
And the sun is a 'small' star.
Space is large.
Hard to believe with how long we have been recording and analyzing our sun; personally a lot of what we expect I feel is speculation.
Incoming minor mindfuck when you realise that this isn't sensationalist and you've just assumed so because it's the Daily Mail
I went in looking for the line that says the solar maximum could wreck our satellites and destroy British values but it's not there. The article is just about the sun's activity and nothing more.
The most sensationalist it gets is in the opening line
'Something unexpected' is happening on the Sun, Nasa has warned.
Oh hey that thing that happens every 11-12 years.
Yes; strange how calm they are about it when normally they'd be sensationalist. It's also strange that there's such calm solar activity at the solar maximum; I'm sure that the 1989 solar maximum caused a blackout in a Canadian city.
Could be anything really. Probably missed its train or something.
[B]SENSATIONALISM!
DAILY MAIL!

The son looks like it got bit by some cosmic star snake. Maybe it just got poisoned like in my pokemans.
I'm just surprised they didn't somehow blame it on gypsies.
The person reporting from NASA is probably a janitor that overheard a conversation and assumed the worst.
I'm assuming it'll be another huge solar flare, as usual.

I loved that movie.
NASA has the original article on what's happening. It seems that it's being interpreted incorrectly in a lot of ways though. Just because this is supposed to be a solar maximum doesn't necessarily mean that there's going to be a maximum amount of activity. It's a predicted model that doesn't have to be followed rigidly. Sometimes what happens is we end up with two peaks of activity in the year, with a low period in between them.

wait, what article does NASA have?
forgive me for my ignorance but is it really that surprising that something unexpected happened on the sun
I mean basically nasa was predicting the sun's weather and we can't even get that right here on earth
Incoming Micheal Bay movie!

Wow! That could have hit us!!
The sun is currently on a twin peak solar activity cycle and we're in between the peaks. There was a sensationalist headlines thread on this several weeks ago.
