According to Joystiq, things are and are not what the headline makes them out to be: Yes, Valve games are currently being offered by EA on Origin in a buy-two-get-one-free deal, with games such as Left for Dead, Left 4 Dead 2 and Counter-Strike: Source (to name a few) making an appearance on the e-tailer’s site. However, the games are not available via digital distribution but are rather available as boxed retail editions. Yes, that means those giant boxes will arrive at your doorstep after you order the game(s).
...
For those of you wondering how Valve games even appear on Origin, just take note that Electronic Arts distributed quite a few of Valve’s games at retail, including The Orange Box, Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2. EA is basically just tapping their reserves and presumably giving the image that they’re still team players.
Wow, I wonder if Valve is going to attempt to counter this at all.
so battlefield 3 cant be on steam, but css can? Do you need steam to have css?
Fuck that, EA won't put there games on Steam. Steam shouldn't let there games be on Origin.
It's just the boxed retail versions of Valve games. EA has been selling them for years.
Fuck EA.
Valve should tell EA to piss off.
so battlefield 3 cant be on steam, but css can? Do you need steam to have css?
Well, there's kind of a catch. Origin won't actually have CSS hosted. EA will just send you a retail version of the game to play. It's funny, in the deal mentioned in the post, the retail boxed version of CS is for sale. That means you also get HL2:DM and DoD for Steam.
Oh yeah I sure want to be EA games now! :downs:
Cunning bastards. And I was wondering whether that publishing deal Valve had with EA was going to come around with this.
It's just the boxed retail versions of Valve games. EA has been selling them for years.
That's still stupid. Besides I though the boxed games also required steam. New Vegas did.
I think its mostly Valve going "im the bigger man" by allowing its games on origin. Just making EA look worse, while cementing Valve as being the good guy.
Also, if you look at the deal in the source, you'll notice that Portal 2 isn't one of the games you can buy through Origin. I don't think EA handled the PC version at all. [editline]5th September 2011[/editline]
I don't see any legal problems in that. but fuck EA and fuck everything they do because fuck
Yeah, legally EA (most likely) has this publishing right. But they're still being massive dicks about it, seeing as they're freely pulling their own products but also manipulating Valve's popular video games so they get more money while Valve loses money because their product isn't be sold on Steam. If EA pushes too hard tensions are going to break. Valve is not going to publish with EA anymore.
So they're essentially selling steam keys? Or are they selling non-steam
That's still stupid. Besides I though the boxed games also required steam. New Vegas did.
They do require Steam, and as the publisher that helps Valve publish its console versions and retail versions this has been going on for years after Valve left Sierra.
But those games require Steam to run, so they could be sending non-Steam customers over to Steam. Is it just me, or is that a bit counter-intuitive?
But those games require Steam to run, so they could be sending non-Steam customers over to Steam. Is it just me, or is that a bit counter-intuitive?
Its been there since before Steam.
I'm pretty sure that nobody is going to do this. EA is just retarded, as usual.
Valve can't really do anything about this because EA is their publisher.
Why is everyone so upset about this, what is wrong about it?
Why is everyone so upset about this, what is wrong about it?
Because Facepunch is completely fucking retarded when it comes to EA, and doesn't think when it comes to spewing anti-EA hate for no reason. Valve is going to gain even more money from this people, stop saying they'll loose money.
Why is everyone so upset about this, what is wrong about it?
Really it's just EA's attitude where "NO VALVE YOU CAN'T SELL OUR GAMES, BUT WE CAN SELL YOURS!" Sure in essence Valve is still getting money and people are still using steam, it's just EA's attitude.
Hasn't this been known for awhile? I mean, Orange Box has been on Origin for awhile now.
Really it's just EA's attitude where "NO VALVE YOU CAN'T SELL OUR GAMES, BUT WE CAN SELL YOURS!" Sure in essence Valve is still getting money and people are still using steam, it's just EA's attitude.
There are still plenty of EA games on Steam. And EA publishes the retail editions of Valve games anyway. They're still getting money.

Sure in essence Valve is still getting money and people are still using steam, it's just EA's attitude.
If that really is the attitude then it's a pretty bad strategy. Companies usually would seek how to make more profit and distribute their games through more mediums You're really blowing this out of proportions
Really it's just EA's attitude where "NO VALVE YOU CAN'T SELL OUR GAMES, BUT WE CAN SELL YOURS!" Sure in essence Valve is still getting money and people are still using steam, it's just EA's attitude.
EA didn't pull their games off steam, Valve removed them because EA wanted to break a contract agreement about how updates to the steam versions of those games were handled. They used to sell Valve games on the EA store just like this. Origin is the EA store now, nothing has changed.
I don't really get what the point of buying them on Origin is when you need Steam to play them anyway.
While technically there's nothing wrong with this, it sure makes EA out to be complete and total dicks, which they are
WOW GUYS EA fucking publishes Valve titles this isn't even surprising in the least and anyone who acts like it is a just grasping at straws
These have been available there since those games were released. Not surprising considering that Origin is just a re-branding of the EA Store and EA Download Manager. People seem to be out to hate Origin without a solid reason to do so.
When i saw the title I thought it meant you can download them and I freaked out but if its just the box version then I don't really care. Kind of strange that it means EA is sending people to steam.
