Rape never happens ban this sick filth
On one hand people shouldn't be getting this upset over a fictional event, on the other it's pretty retarded to televise something like that to the demo graph audience Downton Abbey has out of the blue on public television for ratings and not expect back lash.
Uh, isn't the point of rape to be disturbing and shocking? You know, something dramatic in a period drama?

God forbid they might take it somewhere interesting.
Cool
"'shocking' rape scene"
Congratulations, it portrayed exactly what it was aiming for.
So do we have a video?

Yeah. Just like Sharpe was reprehensible for using war as a setting?
Or Blackadder was reprehensible for making light of the First World War?
Or M*A*S*H was reprehensible for using the Korean War as a setting?
Or how Eastenders is reprehensible for portraying numerous rapes, deaths, suicides, drug addictions, fires, murders, broken christmases, and crying children, despite being a "family drama" too?

Oh god
The rape scene was so tame.
I've seen better irl.

Complaint: One viewer said they were so shocked by the scene that they planned to make an official complaint to the broadcast regulator Ofcom
Do note that this means absolutely fuck all unless the complaint is upheld. Every single TV show that plays on the BBC and ITV gets like, 80 complaints per showing. Unless the complaint is actually upheld and sustained by Ofcom, it's bows and arrows against the lightning.
You could replace "shocking" with a lot of different adjectives and have the story make sense, but I don't see the problem as is?
Downton Abbey under fire after showing 'hilarious' rape scene
Downton Abbey under fire after showing ''delightful' rape scene
Downton Abbey under fire after showing 'erotic' rape scene
"Shocking" seems appropriate, as far as desired adjectives for a rape scene goes. Unless Downton Abbey is a childrens' comedy, or something. In which case, yeah, I guess I could see that being a bit inappropriate.

Most disturbing would be "Downton Abbey under fire after showing 'mundane' rape scene", if you ask me.
Downton Abbey under fire after showing 'ratings-boosting' rape scene
Please, it even gave a warning before it began about violent scenes some viewers may find upsetting or something like that.
Wait, facepunchers actually follow Downtown Abbey? What in the world?

And yet violence against men is just good fun, am I right?
I still wonder, why is murder acceptable on tv(yes fandoms get pissed, but when don't they get pissed off), but rape is a massive outrage?

The previous episode had a scene in a club where one guy got beaten up by a drunk for no reason. You don't hear about complaints about that scene being shown in a 'family drama'.

Well there is a tolerance level.
Sexual assault is usually more messed up than physical assault
Shocking rape scene? As opposed to..?

Less folks have been the subject of attempted murder. Rape is close to home.
