Nintendo will release a line of Skylanders-style NFC action figurines and video games for Wii U and 3DS codenamed Nintendo Figurine Platform, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced during its financial results briefing today.
According to tweets by analyst David Gibson in attendance at the briefing, Nintendo will release a Nintendo Figurine Platform infrared reader for the 3DS so figurines can be used across both the Wii U and 3DS. The company demonstrated technology by showing a Mario figurine "across many games being used including saves."
The Nintendo Figurine Platform has been in development since last year and Nintendo hopes to showcase its related games and figurines in development for the Wii U and 3DS at E3 2014 in June.
The Wii U is saved
Sorry, Nintendo. If you had made this before Disney Infinity, I would've been onboard, but now I can scarce afford it.
The figures look great, but I dont see the point considering we already have multiple other established games like this on the market.
I really hope this fleshed out, and not just a cash grab like other figure games
I don't want to see a new trend of sub-par games that you have to pay $250 to play fully
I wonder what would these be used for? Would they store a game on them or character data?
So theoretically, one could use a figurine to move data over from New Leaf to a new Animal Crossing game and vice versa?

apparently they can have save data on them that transfers between different games
so i guess its kinda like a loyalty program type thing where you buy some stuff and then you get more free in-game stuff down the road because you have it.

Gee, Nintendo, maybe you should've gone ahead with that Skylanders exclusivity deal and made that partnership blossom.
Im not buying into this. They will probably support this idea for about a year and then drop it forever. At least Skylanders is persistent
Nintendo can do it...maybe
I honestly think the entire Skylander's approach is worse than DLC.
Didn't Nintendo turn down Skylanders as an exclusive? What the hell?
I noticed the McDonalds at least in Scotland are selling toys right now with happy meals. It's good they're pushing their advertising into the toy realm more methinks.
I'd probably buy them for the figurines alone.
Was considering getting a WiiU after what they announce at E3, they're going to have to really wow me to make up for this shit.
I could never get into these figure games no matter how good they supposedly are. I could spend my money on so many better things.
Like buying a Mario figurine on eBay for 30 dollars less
Unless there's some awesome Metroid figures than i don't care
I'm sure it won't be another Nintendo peripheral that gets used by one game and then dumped in the trash never to be seen again. Am I right, Wii Speak?
oh god i just realized what if they make smash trophies like this
my god they went and did it
it's over
good figures though i guess?
I seriously hope Nintendo doesn't do this bad next-gen. They're flip-flopping on all kinds of shit.
Sweet it's like on-disk DLC except it takes up physical space and it's ten times as expensive
So their actually going to be putting the NFC reader built into the game pad to use outside of that one Pokemon spinoff game? Okay.
I don't really mind if Nintendo does their own Skylanders thing, won't get the game but i'll might get some of the figures if they're of decent quality and price. One thing I am worried though is them putting exclusive content into their main games but locked behind these figures, something like unlocking a Kart in MK8 when you scan a figure would make me pretty mad.
It would be dorky as hell for a grown ass man to have a figure sitting beside his 3DS while he plays. In America at least.
why not just release a handheld with 3 screens or something
A nintendo crossover that isn't smash bros with every possible character in a figurine form would be sweet! Expensive...but sweet.

Would be awful. I really doubt they'd do that though, except to transfer settings maybe.
[editline]8th May 2014[/editline]
The remotes already have storage space though...

It's like Sony's proprietary memory cards for the PSP and Vita except it takes up a lot more space and is ten times as expensive.

Do they literally cost an arm and a leg!?
