I agree with your statements. Though I won't lie, I do tend to stick to the games/genres that I enjoy most. I never was the Final Fantasy/Zelda fan, and I never really enjoyed those games. I do always try to give new games a shot though, especially if I have friends who want me to see if I like them.
I think anyone can be a gamer. There are just good ones or bad ones. Like good ones are those who have played a good share of games in their lifetime, not nessesarily friendly but know the ins and outs of how to play properly where as you have some gamers who have only started playing and or don't know how to work together as a team with strangers or are just douchebags who's sole enjoyment is crashing or ruining the game for others.
