I've been bearing this question for ages, and have wanted to get into it but never got up to asking about it. Where exactly does a musical DJ like Tiesto start? What's the best thing to do to get into it, creating your own music and making remixes of your own. Is it programs or the turntables + mixer themselves?
Get FL Studio 9, a decent MIDI desktop keyboard and screw around for a few weeks. Listen to other Electronic songs and analyze the structure of them and what you like about them and what makes you like a song more than others (drums, synths, patterns, effects, etc.) mess around and make a few of your own tunes and read through some FLS9 tuts.
ugh, DJ'ing is not the same as producing

If you want to DJ, as in mix music together via turntables I would say get a cheap program like Virtual DJ or even Traktor Scratch Pro to learn the basics of spinning records. If you want to make music, get FL Studio because it is very user friendly and easy to pick up. You can then pick up Reason 4 to get more advanced sounds and such.
I want to be able to play gigs in the future. I thought DJ's like Tiesto and Armin van Buuren produced their music and then mixed it?
I messed around with turntables at a Guitar Center today, i'm guessing the DJ's produce their songs and then load it up to the mixer and mess with it from there, right?
Usually DJ's just spin tracks at parties. However because of the experience with electronic music you get from DJ'ing most are able to produce music themselves.
Also, Tïesto is bland.
I like Deadmau5's work a lot. I just installed Fruity Loops 8 and watched a short tutorial on how to get his effect, and man this is not as hard as I thought it would be.. Just takes time and practice. I'm hoping to save up money to buy an IPOD deck mixer,
You know DJ'ing is spinning records. Right?

FL 8 is old news bro. 9 is where its at.
And if you're really serious about this, get a good sound card, a mixing board, keyboard with midi connectors cause the piano roll sucks balls using a mouse, and some $ for plugins.
These should help you
