The Wall is my favorite album of all time. :siren:WALL OF TEXT:siren: ABOUT The Wall is a rock opera concept album released by Pink Floyd in 1979. It is regarded as one of the greatest albums ever made (note that I said ONE OF THE GREATEST, not THE GREATEST) and is considered the first of many "rock operas" to come. The Wall is mostly based on Pink Floyd's bassist/lyricist Roger Waters. As before mentioned, The Wall is a rock opera, which means that each song tells a portion of a story. In this case, it tells the story of Pink, and his situations. PLOT The album begins with his father dying in World War 2 and Pink's birth. He starts building a metaphorical wall between himself and the world to isolate himself completely. His abusive mother overly protects him and helps Pink build his "Wall", so he won't get hurt like his father did. Later in his life, he marries and becomes a rock star. His rock star status makes him lonely of sorts, which makes him stay after concerts with numerous groupies and almost, if not completely, ignoring his wife. His wife grows tired of his absence and starts cheating on Pink. Pink grows violent and goes depressed. In the last part of "Another Brick In the Wall", he dismisses the people in his life, calling them "bricks in the wall". Pink completes is "Wall" and completely isolates himself from the outside world. At the beginning of disc 2, the song "Hey You" describes Pink's regrets of building the wall. He tries to make contact with anyone outside, without an answer. In "Nobody Home" he learns that his wife doesn't love him anymore. Pink turns to drugs and begins his eventful hallucination. He believes himself to be a fascist dictator, treating his concert crowd to be his peons, and his concerts turn into neo-nazi rallies. Pink orders his "neo-nazis" to raid the homes of Jews and Blacks. They do so, with horrific consequences. Pink grows tired of his dictator status and decides to put himself on trial for his crimes. The judge orders him to "tear down the wall" and the song, and the iconic album, ends with this action. ACCOLADES The Wall has been named Pink Floyds' greatest album and a pioneer in rock operas. Other accolades include various awards and praises. If you think about it, there is not one bad thing you can say about this album. TRACK LISTING Most of these songs were written by Roger Waters. Originally released as a 2-disc, therefore 4 sides the track listing goes as follows: Side one 1. "In the Flesh?" 3:19 2. "The Thin Ice" 2:27 3. "Another Brick in the Wall Part 1" 3:21 4. Top notch album.
Gilmoure is doing this show in The Netherlands for the first time somewhere this year, I'd love to go there.
 We don't need no education! [editline]04:52PM[/editline] I must say, the movie was really trippy. I loved it.
Great album, definitely not their greatest, but still a superb one to have
 We don't need no education!
For some reason, that's one of my least favourite songs from the album. Though, it being a concept piece, I like to listen to it all in one go, in order.

Yea I agree, I either have to listen to the start of the album or start from "another brick in the wall pt1".
Haha, WALL of Text
Haha, WALL of Text
Haha took me a while to figure that one out.... [editline]06:06PM[/editline] All right! 2000 post! Nice! Totally worth it.
best album ever...

Like the beatles white album for them, not the best album but superb
I love this album. One of the greatest albums ever. No need to say that Pink Floyd is my favourite band. I really hate that this album is often associated with drugs and shit. What I hate even more, is that the movie adaption is even more associated with drugs. "Yeah man, this shiz is trippy nigga, let's get baked and watch it".

That gets me just as mad as when people call Closer by Nine Inch Nails the "fucking song..." Anyway...I absolutely love The Wall, it's an amazing concept album and so very easily relatable if you pull bits and pieces from it. So much raw emotion and energy from it that I can't even begin to describe this album. I know it's incredible cliche, but Comfortably Numb is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. Oh, that and Goodbye Blue Sky, for the fucking brutal video from the movie.

Watched the film, didn't think it was as good as people made out.
Great album, definitely not their greatest, but still a superb one to have
I don't see how you can say it's definitely not their best album, yes it's one of their most famous albums and I overplayed it so much I needed to take a break from it but every single song on The Wall is great and the story it carries throughout with the lyrics, background noise and instrumental makes me like it even more than The Dark Side of the Moon, Meddle or Animals even though all their albums are fantastic.
all their albums are fantastic.
Atom Heart Mother and The Final Cut were not great :v:
Again, it's whether you like that sort of genre change or not, you shouldn't keep comparing these albums to Floyd's other albums because they're very different but still good. Unless you're going on reviews only again of course.
Again, it's whether you like that sort of genre change or not
No, if you are able to appreciate different genres then you can compare them in such a way. They are my personal opinion anyway so you need a bit of catching up to do, mate. You jump the gun far too often, try to chill more.. its what makes the music section great :smug: I didn't much favour the Atom Heart Mother suite.. It just didn't seem as pleasing as some hardcore pink floyd fans suggested. Someone told me in a thread here that The Final Cut was Pink Floyd's worst album, I gave it a listen and I am inclined to agree with them after I had a listen. None of what I said is in spite... I adore Pink Floyd's music. But when I see "all their albums are great", I like to debate it. Not out of spite at all! ontopic: also Blonde on Blonde by Bob Dylan, a significant one, not his best :v:
The Wall is amazing. Nobody Home is such a moving song. I can only dislike one song on the whole album and that is Vera. I really don't think you can compare Floyd's better albums against each other. Animals, Meddle, DSOTM, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, they just all have such different sounds and topic matter.
I'm going to see Roger Water's The Wall Tour's opening concert AND the 2nd concert. :smug: Amazing album. Can't wait for the place to be dark and quiet and then all of a sudden, In The Flesh? starts.
does it piss anyone else off how stoners obsess over this band like all the time i'm so sick of hearing about how great Pink Floyd is from people who call them a "trippy band" its almost as bad as Nirvana :[ and yes I realize that Pink Floyd is a great band, I'm not bashing them or anything of the matter. Just the people who give them a bad name :x

You have to get your own opinion about the band, not because "oh stoners are obsessed with this band, that means I don't like them". I especially love the songs that have that spacey feel. That is one of my favorite genres "Space-rock". :allears: [editline]04:59AM[/editline]
The Wall is amazing. Nobody Home is such a moving song. Welcome to the machine gives me this odd post-apocalyptic idea about new-fangled machines, in the middle of the desert. Have a cigar just makes me think of a bar in small town, middle of nowhere. And Wish you were here keeps making me think of the desert theme but with a lot more beauty in it. The imagery in this album is truly amazing, I could write a poem about one of these songs.

Nothing against stoners too, as long as you have some solid reasons to like the band it's all good. It's kinda like getting pissed off by people who claim to like a band but have only listened to their singles.
If someone has only heard singles from Pink Floyd, what you need to do is sit them down and make them listen to Shine On You Crazy Diamonds. That song would never be on the radio because of its length, but it is so good.
You have to make them listen to an entire album from start to finish. All at once.
Dark Side I think was better musically but I think The Wall is better conceptually.
I envy you so much I can't even talk right now.
Meh, it's just Waters. If it was the rest of the band (RIP Richard Wright), then I would be so very violently envious as well.
