TORONTO — Right-wing juggernaut Rob Ford has been elected mayor of Canada's most populous city, defeating former deputy premier George Smitherman in a bitter 10-month race.
With 80 per cent of Toronto polls reporting, Ford took 50 per cent of the vote, compared to Smitherman's 33 per cent and third-place finisher Joe Pantalone at 11 per cent.
Smitherman was considered an early favourite to win, but couldn't compete against Ford who tapped into a potent well of voter fury with his tax-cutting, ``stop the gravy train'' message.
Polls closed in the Toronto race — and in the majority of the 443 other Ontario municipal races — at 8 p.m. ET.
Even the dying days of the contest were marred by ugly incidents, including homophobic ads targeting the openly gay Smitherman, and a newspaper article — later pulled from the Globe and Mail website — that took a shot at Ford's weight.
Many experts had predicted that a Ford victory could herald a conservative sweep in next fall's Ontario election.
While I an too young to vote, he was the candidate I was rooting for. Toronto needed a change after the NDP Miller wrecked it, and that change was conservatism.
:woop:

As long as you don't mean social conservatism(Which, knowing you is what you do mean)then sure.

"Right Wing Rob..."
:raise:
Good for Canada, and I seriously mean that.
Good for Canada, and I seriously mean that.
Canada? Dumbfuck, it's in Toronto.
Calgary (where I live) got Naheed Nenshi, should've gotten McIver, who has much stronger experience.
sounds like a place i would go to eat buffalo wings.

"good job going more conservative"? That's not really a good thing unless you're... :downs:
Canada? Dumbfuck, it's in Toronto.
Umm what
Toronto is in Canada

Yea so I congratulate Canada for having a conservative mayor in one of its cities and this deserves being called a dumbfuck how?
"good job going more conservative"? That's not really a good thing unless you're... :downs:
I'm assuming that you are liberal, in which case I respect your opinion. I would also like to point out the fact that this mayor won on the impression that he would lower taxes, which is a traditionally conservative belief. I've never considered lower taxes a bad thing, but perhaps you think otherwise. So, in this case, if "going more conservative" means lower taxes in Toronto, then it could very well be a good thing.
personally i dont really care because in the end it will not effect me to much but good for you Op
As long as he's not a social conservative, I don't give a fuck.

He is.

That isn't really true, Nenshi has plenty of experience when it comes to business, he has taught at Mount Royal University, and has been to Harvard, U of C. McIver was also a good candidate but you have to admit that Nenshi had a stronger campaign. He deserved the win.
Also calling someone a dumbfuck over something that isn't even wrong makes you sound like a dumbfuck.
He's a MAYOR, stop getting your shit in a knot
worst he can do is paint the word god all over the garbage trucks
He's gonna fuck everything up. Everything.
His transit plan makes no sense. He wants to turn the Scarbourough RT into the Bloor-Danforth Subway which would require
1) A 90 degree turn at Kennedy Station, ie: impossible.
2) The lengthening and widening of all the stations on the line.
3) The subway trains the B-D Subway use can't make the turn at Ellesmere and Midland.
Simply put, it's impossible. He's also keeping in his budget the $3.7 bil the province promised for Transit City while he wants to get rid of Transit City. The money the province proposed was specifically for Transit City. He's gonna have to conduct all the studies and reports and re-plan all the shit that was already mostly done for Transit City. There is no way in hell that the subways he's proposing will be done for 2015.

better than david miller, that asshat did absolutely nothing to help the city
i hope he holds up to his promise to sort out the financial mess in the municipal government

Which is the problem with people like you, you're willing to support economically left-wing people because they are also socially left-wing. It is easier to fight to gain social freedom than economic freedom. Once the government takes it you aren't getting it back. The government can't take social freedom, only suppress it.

That's good. By the time he gets through with it, it won't cost near $3.7 billion.
Also a guy named DaCommie1 supporting Ford?
why cant people see purchasing power as a freedom
He is.
I guess it doesn't matter quite so much since gays can already marry in Canada.

Ironic, I know, I named myself after the views I had when I was 14 and thought "LOL COMMUNISM, STAND UP TO BIG EVIL AMERICA" and "That would mean everyone would have a PS3 AND a 360!" Then I realized what communism really does, and changed my viewpoints. (Been waiting for someone to point out that my name doesn't fit my ideals)

That's the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard. Social conservatism takes away less rights than really liberal economic policies? ARE YOU SERIOUS?

I mean socially conservative. Something we don't, and will never need.
If he's fiscally conservative, fine, I don't terribly care as long as it makes sense.

Other countries don't send in peacekeepers when governments federalize industries and crackdown on black markets.

He is socially liberal and fiscally conservative, the only morally acceptable and long-term form of political views.

No it isn't, are you fucking kidding me? You must be critical thought, only he is as dumb as you to believe that. You can have governments working in all ranges of the political spectrum, just depends on the situations. No one should be dumb enough to just rule out anything else, and even then, being fiscally conservative isn't the fucking way to go. Lasseiz Faire style economies just leave the poor in the dirt.
Jesus fuck.

you have no idea what the best long term of government is, your just saying your own views
Socialist spending is unsustainable, so this is at least longer-term than that. Look at the country that have had fiscal economic policies, and see how developed and advanced they are. The United States for most of it's history, Switzerland for the past century; show me one fiscally left-wing country that isn't on the verge of collapse or has serious rights abuses.
