God damn it Sessler just when I had convinced myself there would be no hl3 announcement.
Steam is pretty much a separate division of Valve from their games.
Sure, their games could provide solid testing and examples of how their systems work like with trading (which evolved into trading cards), Steam Workshop, and SteamPipe but they are not going to release games just to entice people to switch to their OS.
Can't say that I disagree with anything he's said regarding the steam OS. It's risky and I wonder what their chances of real success are, but if they do come through it could change the game around quite a bit.
If major developers begin developing games to run natively on a linux-based system it would erode microsoft's hold on PC gaming. I know I'd love to be able to play new releases on a system which uses significantly fewer resources itself and leaves more open for the game.
An OS switch for PC-gaming would take years to complete and when Microsoft is pretty much sitting on a killswitch for PC-gaming and therefore also Steam it not strange that Valve is releasing a Steam OS so quickly.
What I mean is that Microsoft can decide to 'kill' PC-Gaming in their next OS by making changes that make publishing games harder, for example no longer updating DX for windows or closing the OS.
Sure SteamOS won't make a big splash after it is released at first, but it will be a vital plan B if Microsoft decides to do something silly.
If it means having an OS that is dedicated to making sure the games I play run smoothly, then yes I will transition almost right away. Why not? Until now we've only had gaming specific hardware, nothing in the OS department was ever designed solely for gaming. I'm not sure how different an OS would be when it's focus turns from general use to gaming but I don't expect a whole lot of a difference.
Basically I can see this OS being designed to be friendly to all gaming applications, rather than being hit or miss because of some update that removes X feature.
