Hopefully it's a very qualifying rip-off so that it could further inspire other game companies to build and expand on the "Dungeon Keeper" Vibe and thus hopefully more games can come out with the same genre as this.
This is a very good game, but don't go play it expecting a Dungeon Keeper 3.
To quote one of the designers:
Hi,
I am one of the developers of Dungeons (find me in the credits, I am Immanuel Scholz). I'd like to explain a bit what Dungeons is, more important what it is not and why.
First of all: This is my personal opinion, not any "official statement" from Kalypso or Realmforge Studios. Still, I found my opinion reflected in almost all interviews we gave to the press.
So What is Dungeons about?
Imagine your favourite MMORPG. Look at the Dungeons you get presented there and then ask yourself: Why the heck are these barely locked treasure chests build all around the place again? Why are the monsters so stupid and easy to kill? Or at least they seem to be in nicely sorted in an order getting progressively stronger.. And there is lying equipment around all the place, even magical scrolls are "hidden" all over the place. Why? Why?
Behind this narrative, the game mechanics are arranged to get you build a dungeon that just looks nice. You have to build gimmicks and rooms that the typical RPG-hero is familar with. Place treasure chests, place armory equipment, place stupid monsters-spawns for endless slashing fun and so on..
To finally give a reason for this strange Dungeon-Layout of Diablo, WoW and Co, we introduced soul energy. This resource is the stuff the lord of the dungeon is after. The more happy a hero is with the dungeon, the more soul energy you can squeak out of him.
What is Dungeons NOT?
You probably guessed it: It's not Dungeon Keeper. In Dungeon Keeper, everything was about your minions. Your main concern was "how to raise and build up a dungeon in an environment of limited resources and space which is finally attacked by enemy heroes". The difficulty was how to manage depleting resources to an maximum efficiency before a threat finally (and often suddenly) arrives. Although you could plan your attack strike before, DK combat lived from rather short and sudden actions.
Dungeons is about "how to make sense of building a dungeon you have seen in many RPG's before". Its also about "how to flourish and build up a dungeon in a harsh environment constantly raided by enemy heroes" The difficulty is to manage and plan ahead in a constant spiral of stronger threat. Resources are endless, but you need to build on top of an existing threat - you need this threat to gain resources! (That's the 'harvest the enemies' - part). Emphasis is not on fast actions, but on strategy and long-term planning.
So why does Dungeons look so similar to Dungeon Keeper?
Why not? Dungeon Keeper was an awefully good game! Probably all of the developer played it and most of them are fans. I know I am!
So.. we could either make a feature as a homage to the great game Dungeon Keeper or we can artifactially change it to look different just for the sake of beeing different. But why should we do that? I strive to make the best game possible and if we can place some great allusions and side kicks to Dungeon Keeper, even better! This great old game deserves some jibes and references
By the way, there are also tons of allusions to Diablo, WoW, AD&D and tons of (fantasy) movies.
This means everything is lost? DK3 will never gonna happen?
I don't know. Realmforge doesn't know. Kalypso doesn't know. We just made a game in the same genre with tons of funny allusions to DK. We never intended of making a remake of DK and actually I doubt that Dungeons has any impact on EA deciding for or against any successor - but I accept that controversial opinions exist here.
And for an even more personal opinion: I would LOVE to see some modding community springing out and start to try to make Dungeons into a modern version of DK. I've seen how vastly immense time and energy a Mod cummunity can bury into some projects, so it might even become reality some day. I would gladly help with Modding documentation and HOWTOs.
Hope I could spark your interest and I hope you start the Demo with a better prepared mind set.
