A Hummer-driving hero? Defying the stereotypes generally associated with the gas-guzzling, military-inspired vehicles, one Canadian man used his car to shield four young children in danger of being run over last week.According to a press release obtained by the Edmonton Journal, Darrell Krushelnicki, 46, was pulling out of the Bonnie Doon Shopping Centre in Edmonton at about 4:25 p.m. on Friday when he noticed a silver Pontiac G5 speeding toward a nearby intersection, just as a group of children stepped out into the crosswalk.
Realizing the children were in imminent danger, Krushelnicki quickly drove his 2006 Hummer into the path of the oncoming vehicle.
In the ensuing collision, Krushelnicki's Hummer pushed the Pontiac, which investigators say was traveling at close to 80 kilometers (about 50 mph) in a 30 kilometer (about 20 mph) zone, to the side before it could reach the crosswalk. The fronts of both cars were crumpled on impact, although neither driver was seriously injured.
Krushelnicki told CBC News the life-saving maneuver was instinctive.

"I could just see, I just had the feeling that something bad was going to happen if something wasn't to stop that vehicle," he said. "There was really no one else, I just had to do it. I had to do what I did."
Witnesses claim the driver of the Pontiac, John Troy Heitzman, 23, was talking on his cell phone. Heitzman has since been charged with dangerous driving. It is illegal talk on a hand-held device and drive in Alberta, which enacted its Distracted Driving legislation in September of 2011.

Krushelnicki made the front page of the Edmonton Sun this week and already has a fan page on Facebook: "Hummer Hero."
Surprised by the attention his quick thinking has earned him, Krushelnicki told CBC that he doesn’t think he did anything extraordinary. "I don't feel like a hero at all," he said, "I believe anyone would have done that."
The Edmonton Journal is reporting that in recognition of Krushelnicki's actions, his insurance company will not hold him liable, even though he instigated the collision.
Police in Edmonton have since recommended Krushelnicki for an award, CBS reports, with police spokesperson Scott Pattison remarking that if not for the Good Samaritan, "We could have been talking about a very different story today, that involved potentially the serious injury or death of four children."
What a fucking hero, that guy needs a fucking medal.
Wow, so the Pontiac guy:
A. Didn't keep his eyes on he road
B. Was talking on his cell phone
C. Drove 30MPH over the speed limit, near a crosswalk
Fucking hell

I don't mind speeding, but anyone who talks on their phone when they drive - assuming it isn't an emergency - is a fucking idiot.
Fucking hell people I don't mean that the fact this guy was speeding is excusable - he was probably speeding because he was on the phone like a fucking idiot.
I didn't even say "I don't mind the fact he was speeding" I said "I don't mind speeding" in general (and within reason.)
I don't mind speeding, but anyone who talks on their phone when they drive - assuming it isn't an emergency - is a fucking idiot.
Sure, I guess its not so bad if you're 5-10 MPH over the limit if you're very careful, but this jackass not only wasnt careful, he almost fucking tripled the speed limit.
Is this like an urban area or something? How do you pull off turns at 50MPH?
I don't mind speeding, but anyone who talks on their phone when they drive - assuming it isn't an emergency - is a fucking idiot.
The guy should have his license stripped from him for life, with no opportunity to retake his tests and get a new license.
And depending on how far over the speed limit you are it's debatable, 5 mph over is forgivable but not being at 50 in a residential area.

I don't think he knew the speed limit since he clearly wasn't paying attention.
Obviously you brake before you turn unless you want to understeer like heck

Well considering he was at a crosswalk (usually at an intersection) it was about time for him to turn. Well, unless he was going straight.
Any pics of the area?
And this is a situation where the heft of that hummer was good for something. Inattentive driver? Meet immovable wall.
Here's hoping the guy's insurance gives him another hummer on the house. Those things are damned pricey, and he wrote his off in the name of saving four innocents from an idiot. He deserves a brand new H2 as a replacement.
G5s are fairly sporty for common man's cars. It may have been near the edge of it's grip but it could make curves in the road at that speed.
I don't mind speeding, but anyone who talks on their phone when they drive - assuming it isn't an emergency - is a fucking idiot.
Am I missing something here? Is talking on your phone when you drive suddenly the cool thing to do?
Idiotic people can be prevented with intelligent people. It has been proven right here.
I wonder sometimes if it's TOO easy to get a drivers license

No dude, it's the part where you said you don't mind speeding.

With some modifications to a car, and good tires, you'd be surprised how well some cars can hold onto the road.

I don't mean in this specific situation. Of course going 30 above the speed limit is fucking reckless.
I'm just saying the problem probably stemmed from the fact that the guy was on the phone while driving, which is just fucking stupid.
I wonder sometimes if it's TOO easy to get a drivers license
It IS, you're talking about on average say 2 to 2 and a half tons of metal and volatile liquids that can move at speeds of up to 80 - 90 mph with complete ease, and maybe 100 mph at a push for some pretty bad cars. You are then putting this capability into the hands of the general public, who for the most part are sensible, but every now and again a screaming retard gets their hands on them and they have no idea the sheer power they have in their hands and they fuck it up and people die.
20 mph is enough to kill people and we regularly hit 80 or so in these cars, it's fucking terrifying in my mind that some people get to drive these things.

YOLO

Very likely it was a set of crossroads with lights, most have pedestrian crossings on them.
Kinda sucks it was likely a H2/H3 instead of a H1, that pontiac would have been destroyed if it was the H1.

I think the problem stems from the fact that (at least in the US) there's no follow-ups - I mean, you get your license, which is a one-shot thing, and then all you have to do is renew it once in awhile. People start driving shittily and it's awful. There are people who don't check before they make a lane merge (which is why I was in an accident in June), people who are clearly too old to drive - hell, a friend of mine has totaled two cars and he's barely 19.
I wonder sometimes if it's TOO easy to get a drivers license
no amount of test difficulty will reduce speeding. you'll just reduce the amount of drivers on the road.
Never judging people with a hummer ever again
Okay maybe sometimes

It's the same here in the UK I'm pretty sure, I've not had my license long but man I eagerly await the pants shitting moment when some retard sends my Corsa to oblivion.
Out of curiosity how strenuous are the tests to get a drivers license in the US?

Agreed. It's really piss easy to get that license in the first place here. My road test amounted to putzing around in a suburb for five minutes. I literally didn't get out of the 'burbs at all.
The test, which I took in a 2 door FWD 4-cyl commuter car, gave me a license that would let me drive one of these on public highways:

Now I'm not such a screaming retard that I'd kill someone in a Duece, but it's astonishing that other people took the same exact road test I took, can legally drive one of those things, and barely know which way to push the shifter to go foward.
It's a miracle TN's roads aren't lined with crosses...
I wonder sometimes if it's TOO easy to get a drivers license
I agree, my driving test giver guy looked like he was trying to pass a kidney stone with how reluctant he was to give me my license.

Mind you, that test gave me a license to drive one of these:

All I had to do to get my license was the 150 or whatever hours for your permit, and I had to do 6 hours total with my driving instructor. Plus the written test which is memorization.
I did three two-hour sessions with my instructor, and that's 6 hours on merit that decides you get your license. six hours. That's barely anything compared to how much driving I will be doing for the rest of my lfie.

My test took fifteen minutes. We hit three stops signs, one street light, and never got into any traffic or onto a road above 45MPH. Ten of the fifteen minutes were spent doing paperwork and boredly confirming the fucking headlights worked.
That was literally all there was to it. I could have turned around and driven a 16,000 pound military 10x10 truck to high school the next day, and all the state wanted to verify I knew how to drive the thing was being able to pilot a city car around a suburb. It's laughable. They might as well have not even bothered and just asked me "Can you drive?"
Wow, this happened in my own city and I didn't hear anything about it. I hope one of our local news stations picks up this story instead of it being solely in a newspaper because this man deserves way more recognition than he's getting here.

Ban cars?
Of course not that's ridiculous. It should be more difficult to get a license and there should be retests after a certain age or something. Too many unfit people have access to vehicles.

That's hardly even a driving test, it's more of a "can you operate this vehicle" test.
