I can't even imagine how they could have mistook the warship for a cargo ship.
I read another source that said they attacked a refueling/supply ship, not a combat ship, and upon some research it appears that the Patino class is in fact... A resupply ship.

If you wanted to bait the pirates into attacking you, you may want to disguise your ship to look like a civilian vessel, right? Well apparently not. This isn't the only time they've attacked a fucking warship. There was also a failed hijacking where they sank their own little boat trying to board the one they were attacking

The Spanish and French are losing. The French retreat, leaving the Spanish as a decoy which got demolished, leaving Spain with only 5 warships.
Spain never had anything really after. It's even the reason they didn't join the First World War, 'cause they were so behind technologically.

It's not like the pirates are a large, organized force with someone at the top who gives commands.
It's unorganized poor African men that take slightly reinforced fishing boats and almost broken weapons. Then they attack large but unarmed cargo or commercial vessels.
Their country is in constant turmoil and there's nothing to get on land, so they go to sea.
And how would these men even learn about prior raiding fails. Even if anyone knew them, they probably just thought "They didn't come back, either a storm got them or their raft got turned over"
