Beirut (CNN) -- When all-American Jennifer Grout first stepped on stage to audition, nobody could have anticipated how this 23-year-old from Massachusetts would take the Middle East by storm. Now, she may very well win "Arabs Got Talent," one of the biggest televised talent contests in the region. During her debut appearance, she looked so out of place that many thought she'd flop altogether. "It was nerve-wracking," Grout said, "because I came on stage and I didn't understand." The show's judges were questioning her in Arabic, and Grout had great difficulty following, making for some very awkward moments. But then she started strumming her oud, a traditional Arabic musical instrument, and the mood began to shift. She belted out a classic Arabic song. That's when her life changed. The American novice had chosen to cover an Egyptian diva, legendary songstress Umm Kulthoum, so revered throughout the region that many Arabic singers would be too intimidated to make such an attempt. In unrelated news the Department of Defense has allocated 1 million dollars to an oud strike team.
Good for her!
that's cool
damn freedomist spies
Didn't an Arab win an American show and people shat themselves?
damn that is really awesome. i'v always had an interest in near eastern music styles from playing classical guitar(spanish and flamenco has byzantine/arab influence). the music is absolutely beautiful and for some reason seeing an american woman getting such notoriety for playing in front of an arab audience sorta gives me hope that i might be able to one day become proficient with near easten music styles. also oud is badass, i want one so bad.
That's awesome. I've wanted to learn to play the Oud for a while now, it's such an interesting instrument.
I think it was Miss America
Thought that was an Indian and everyone mistook her for an Arab girl?
Thought that was an Indian and everyone mistook her for an Arab girl?
She was Indian and people were demanding the winner be a "real" American.
That was really awesome, and she seems like such a sweet girl with dat smile.
I own a hand-crafted oud. My dad bought the thing as a souvenir when he was away in the Emirates on business. As far as I'm concerned, those with the talent to win deserve to win, whosoever they may be.

In the 2010 Miss USA contest, Miss Michigan, Rima Fakih won the contest. Some dipshits got angry because they felt someone born in the USA should've won. Fakih was born in Lebanon, but she was raised most of her life in Michigan and considered her self as such. There was a lot of coverage about how twitter exploded with bigoted comments and other insensitive crap. In the 2014 Miss America contest (they are done on a similar premise but competing groups, kind of like the numerous singing shows we have like American Idol, X Factor, or The Voice) was Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, an Indian-American. Like the previous one people were making a shit over her ethnicity, even when she was born and raised in the US. On top of all that, some mistook her for a Muslim and raged (not to say it would've been ok in that instance, but you get my point). Like Fakih there was also attention to how some twitter users reacted. It should be emphasized though that a lot of the outrage was some dickish comments on twitter, it's to be expected unfortunately. Thankfully there were plenty of people standing up for the two paegant winners.
The Founding fathers weren't born in the United States.
A lot of them were, including George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. It's just that Virginia and Boston were technically British land when they were born there.
Take that, terrorists!

The obsession with natural-born citizenship is silly anyways.
