• Who Owns the Arctic?

I know that the Arctic is not legally owned by every country, but what are some arguments that the countries (Canada, United States, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Russia) can use to attempt to gain ownership of it?
Doesn't Russia own it or am I thinking of something else/living in another world?
According to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, every maritime state’s continental shelf extends 200 nautical miles; within this area is a state’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). However, states can extend their jurisdiction up to a maximum of 350 nautical miles by submitting geological evidence to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) within 10 years of ratifying the Law of the Sea . The primary players involved in this process are Russia, Canada, Denmark, and Norway, all of whom have Arctic coastline. America is also a stakeholder, but one that is acting outside the UN framework. http://www.geopoliticalmonitor.com/arctic-ownership-claims
It's still vague all together, it's best to presume that the Artic is split up and each country near it's shores gets a piece of the "land".
Currently, nobody owns the Arctic. The countries that I posted all have claims on it though.
Just divide it up between the countries who border it, same with Antarctica.
I'm pretty sure it's divided up between multiple countries
The mankind should own it. The way how countries have formed and natural resources have split are quite dumb. Norway has gathered so much money from oil that they could cut all taxes off for 10-20 years as EU wallows in debt. Does the country "earn" the land just by being near it? Why should it be anyone's land. I don't think finland has made any claims for the arctic?
Canada strong [editline]7th November 2011[/editline] Seriously though I hope Canada just doesn't roll over and say "oh okay... you guys can have it" It'll be interesting to see who becomes the next Norway by striking shit loads of oil.
The arctic should be be so it can be a lawless land for the Penguins/Polar Bears. Or people. Owning arctic land is just for dick waving really.
Why would anyone even want the arctic? Its a frozen wasteland.
Are you talking about the arctic as in the polar cap? Because there isn't any land under that. Treat it like you would international waters. But other than that, most of the land that is in the arctic(above 66 degrees north latitude) is held by The United States, Canada, Greenland(Denmark), Scandinavia, etc. What you should be asking, is who has rights to Antarctica?
Antarctica has no government, although various countries claim sovereignty in certain regions. While a few of these countries have mutually recognised each other's claims,[62] the validity of these claims is generally not recognised universally
I do. (User was banned for this post ("This isn't how you post in Mass debate" - Swebonny))
Why would anyone even want the arctic? Its a frozen wasteland.
Mineral resources, naval/airbases, shipping lanes and also due to global warming the frozen wasteland is slow getting less frozen each year.
