• Not Pulling the Plug: G4 Not Being Replaced By Esquire anymore, Will Remain Brain-Dead Instead
Months ago now, news broke that “geek” channel G4 would be axed and replaced by the new “Esquire Network” for the discerning male who has presumably grown out of video games and into amassing a collection of cufflinks. Ahead of the transition, G4 was essentially stripped for parts by NBC Universal (owned by Comcast CMCSA +2.26%. in case you’ve forgotten), with tentpole shows like X-Play and Attack of the Show cancelled, their staffs dismembered. The channel became literally nothing but reruns of Cops, Campus PD and Ninja Warrior with an occasional movie thrown in, waiting for its new Esquire overlords to take over. Well, that isn’t happening anymore. According to THR, the Esquire Network is coming, but the channel it’s replacing will be the Style Network, not G4. Seems like a better fit, and now maybe we’ll get to see the old channel return to life, right? Wrong. NBC Universal is reportedly planning no further investment in G4. That means no resurrecting its old shows, and no creating new or original programming for the network. It will simply continue to exist as is, a network that’s completely brain-dead, only able to show re-runs of shows that usually weren’t even good the first time. It’s yet another reason why cable looks increasingly unappealing for the average consumer, that they’re stuck with channels like this that even their owners don’t care about. That said, I think we’re past the point of needing a “geek” TV channel, as such geeks can find their programming elsewhere, and mainly on the internet, which is a far more effective delivery vehicle than television anyway. Esquire may not be the greatest idea ever either, but it already sounds better than G4. No, cooking/travel/lifestyle shows from Anthony Bourdain and Ryan Seacrest might not be my cup of tea, but they’ve certainly licensed better reruns which include Psych, Burn Notice, Party Down, Parks and Recreation and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Though you could show every re-run of Party Down in what, two days? And as for G4? Well, tune in today for X-Play, Cops, Ninja Warrior, Heroes and Lost reruns, followed by one of the defining video game films of our generation, Tekken.
Source. I really wonder if Comcast has an endgame for G4 anymore.
For all intents and purposes G4 is dead thanks noss
intents and purposes sorry it just makes me die a little inside when someone says intensive
That is pretty damn sad.
intents and purposes sorry it just makes me die a little inside when someone says intensive
Fuck I said intensive because I wasn't sure if it was Intents and purposes or Intensive God damn my 50/50 chance
an article about g4! time to get all nostalgic i remember when g4 was actually techtv, and x-play was actually called extended play. they had a machinima show called portal, along with watching call for help, and screensavers ahhh good times
How about just bring back "G4 classic" with old episodes of Cinematech, Attack of the show, Xplay, and all of those really really good shows before it became shit?
More Cops!
More Cops!
Don't forget Cheaters!
It’s yet another reason why cable looks increasingly unappealing for the average consumer, that they’re stuck with channels like this that even their owners don’t care about.
Indeed, though by far not the only one. Satellite is miles ahead of everything cable can even consider offering. For what cable subscribers pay for ~100 channels I get >1,000. literally.
an article about g4! time to get all nostalgic i remember when g4 was actually techtv, and x-play was actually called extended play. they had a machinima show called portal, along with watching call for help, and screensavers ahhh good times
Indeed, though the only thing I watched was screensavers.
Long live Tech TV!
G4 died during the merger with TechTV. Both were great individual channels but the combining of the two was probably the worst decision in Cable history. This whole "Style Network" sounds like an interesting addition though. Can't wait to hear their hour-long special on fedoras

Ive always had tons of channels, but 75%+ of the time when i watch TV, theres either nothing at all im interested in, or very old reruns. Ive watched G4 quite a bit, just for Cops and Ninja Warrior. Everytime i saw X-Play, it ended up being old episodes about games i already had or games i wasnt interested in
How about just bring back "G4 classic" with old episodes of Cinematech, Attack of the show, Xplay, and all of those really really good shows before it became shit?
Don't forget Arena. I loved watching that. I remember them playing Tactical Ops War on Terror, Mechwarrior 4, and SOCOM US Navy Seals.
i remember seeing the show eye drops that was just showing off prerendered cutscenes. holy shit they look worse then games today :v:
Now I can continue watching cheaters all day! I haven't seen G4 since DirectTV pulled it over a contract dispute, at least it still had some integrity before it vanished from my eyes
The problem with G4's programming is that outside of maybe having higher production values, all the show's formats (gaming news, tech reviews, machinima and comedy shows, syndication of foreign shows) have been pretty much made null by the internet. There's hundreds of Youtube shows with personalities that spout news that's much more up to date obviously, given the format. Sure the better overall production quality of a TV channel with these subjects will give it some appeal, but hardly ever an edge.
intents and purposes sorry it just makes me die a little inside when someone says intensive
Yeah, it's a doggy dog world and mistakes like those are a diamond dozen.
So does this mean Campus PD isn't coming to my school now?
Its kinda sad but Revision3 is basically TechTV now so its not like we're missing the programming (was started by the old folks behind TechTV, and now even has a lot of the people behind G4 on there too like Adam Sessler) And you don't have to pay a bullshit cable fee to get it!
bring back old episodes of x play (electric playground) and start a retro gaming trend!
I miss extended play and early x-play :( The skits were the best part, the reviews were cool too.

If you combine the production quality of a TV show with net/streaming capabilities then you have the best of both worlds, a good TV show that is available to all without the mess that comes with running a TV channel. TV is a weird thing to me. I believe in the future a lot TVs will run off of the internet and more in the style of Netflix but completely up to date as well as live broadcast options. With availability and speeds rapidly increasing, then the need for a separate TV network seems more and more redundant to me. We are already starting to see the internet encroaching on TVs with more and more newer 'smart TVs' being sold. They have all of the major streaming services on them like Netflix, iPlayer etc.

That's what Revision3 is - its literally the same people behind old G4 and techTV doing their own web-only TV stuff.
this is even worse than completely killing the channel. it's like a person stuck in a painful self-aware vegetative state calling out for a mercy kill, but everybody just stands and looks. pull the plug already.
This is one of the reasons why I don't watch TV anymore, the internet can provide the same content on demand with less irritating commercials at equal or even lesser rates than the TVs cost.
