We've been on this kick for a long time, so it's nice to see it percolating into the general consciousness. What's happening in the UK is contrary to the notion that we need to cut spending to create jobs. At least in the short term, austerity is painful and negative to the economy.
The New York Times takes a big look at what's been happening:
But in Britain, one year into its own controversial austerity program to plug a gaping fiscal hole, the future is now. And for the moment, the early returns are less than promising.
Retail sales plunged 3.5 percent in March, the sharpest monthly downturn in Britain in 15 years. And a new report by the Center for Economic and Business Research, an independent research group based here, forecasts that real household income will fall by 2 percent this year. That would make Britain’s income squeeze the worst for two consecutive years since the 1930s.
The article implies that somehow this news should or could inform the US debate, but we're pretty doubtful. Most discussion of spending and taxes and deficits is based on politics, and not really economics (on both sides), so evidence is routinely ignored.
But for investors, this is certainly useful as a guide to how the economy would react if the brakes really are slammed on spending.
And lest you think this is easy after-the-fact analysis, it was easy to see this coming. Here we were last June predicting this.

do the in-article links work for anybody else because the weirdest thing just happened and the web browser on this computer just copied the links into the OP for me
What? Misleading thread title.
I think the United States already realizes there is a problem, since you know, it's been going on for years.

Well if you exclude the south and approximately half the nation's politics yeah
[editline]f[/editline]
I wasn't saying that the south remains unaffected by an economic crisis I said that it holds conservative views regardless which is the focus of this article, jesus
It's getting pretty bad up here in Canada as well.

define "south"

considering that looks like vancouver's homeless i really wouldn't say that'd be red-necks lol.
The Sun.

You're an idiot. The Southern United States is feeling the economic crisis just as bad, if not worse than everyone else. I don't care how stupid you perceive southerners to be, we're not. I don't even know where that idea came from other than the rampant poverty, but it's not for lack of education. Some of the best educational instutions in the country are Louisiana State University, Mississippi State, University of South Alabama. Nearly half of those people you perceive as unintelligent, uneducated, or otherwise stupid have been through a university or at least community college. I bet you can't say that about whatever shithole you live in.

This article is about (lack of) government spending and its effect on the economy which the south with its generally conservative population perpetuates
The Sun.
The Business Insider.
You can't even bother to check the source.

no one wants spending done because we don't trust anyone in power to do the proper spending, it also includes southern liberals, they also don't want anything to be spent because it's always spent on dumb shit.
This is basic economics, cutting spending reduces production, which reduces jobs, which reduces employment, which reduces how much families spend.
OP, you can't see the Business Insider logo because it blends in almost perfectly with the background colors.

So it looks like you used The Sun as a source.

You obviously haven't been through any sort of economics class on any level so I'm going to let your ignorance go until you extensively research the subject.

Also there is that gulf oil spill.
How are we warning the US exactly? Don't vote for conservatives?
yeah pretty much the message is don't let those tory wankers in
Also there is that gulf oil spill.
The companies at fault were Transocean, Halliburton, and BP; companies from Switzerland, Oklahoma, and Great Britain, respectively. Halliburton was simply acting on order from the other two companies.
And besides that, the Oil Spill was up-played by the media. it's not near as bad as everyone thinks it is.
Everybody bitches about everything. If it was labour they'd still be criticising so it's not exactly a warning of any sort.

not to mention all the people who are deathly sick from the chemicals BP dumped in the ocean

I'm not denying that it was bad, I'm saying it wasn't as bad as the media made it out to be. They took pictures and video of the worst affected areas and passed them off as the entire Gulf Coast.
also protip: it's Boomhauer, not Boonhower
Based on the title, I was expecting to see a British Aircraft Carrier off the coast of New York or something...
By the way, Boomhauer is portrayed as highly astute throughout the entire series. Before you mention it, that "speech impediment" he's got is a fairly typical Cajun accent, and not a sign of stupidity.
