Every 16 year old in Sweden is given a book on how to be a feminist.

For all you Swedish posters is this true?
In other news, Sweden is fully absorbed up it's own asshole.
[sp]seriously sweden fix your shit[/sp]
But is the book about feminism or "feminism"?
But is the book about feminism or "feminism"?
At this point it's very hard to find "true" feminism.
I don't know the slightest thing about education in Sweden but even if it is about "legitimate" feminism, do students really need an entire book about it? In America we had textbooks for each subject, so we learned about feminism in social studies as an example.
Interesting, I have that very same bottle of red wine on my bookshelf. Not bad, but not really chuggable either.
never heard of it
But is the book about feminism or "feminism"?
it should be called "equality", honestly
But is the book about feminism or "feminism"?
You are asking if it is for second or third wave feminism.
Can't say I've ever heard of this book. And.. err, can't say I care too much about it being given out either. I like to think sixteen year old people are old enough to form fairly cohesive opinions, rather than lapping things up without question, and I don't think a single book is necessarily going to change much.
For one, the people being handed it have to bother reading it. :v:
But is the book about feminism or "feminism"?
I would believe it to be the bullshit kind,.
But is the book about feminism or "feminism"?
I'd put my money on feminism seeing as he didn't complain about its contents.

Amazing insight into a book we're not actually sure exists. I'm sure you've got some solid evidence for this claim right?
Feminism aside the whole "everyone gets a copy of this book" thing sounds like something out of a communist country. :bullshit:

Why wouldn't it exist?: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Should_All_Be_Feminists
I haven't read it and I certainly know very little about it, but from what I gathered from her TED talk she's advocating the breaking down of gender expectations as they prevent individuality on both sides. For example, we shouldn't teach boys to fear vulnerability or ask for help and we shouldn't teach girls to only aspire for marriage. Basically, gender/sex shapes us, typically against our will, and that it shouldn't have to.
Although I think this guy does bring up a pretty decent argument, a lot of the stuff she talks about is based on her experiences of living in Nigeria, and while her points are pretty legitimate, it might not have the effect on people that she intends.
Sweden is a laughing stock.

Unfortunately Swedens version of feminism isn't exactly that great.
You are asking if it is for second or third wave feminism.
Nah, there's the third-wave feminism that's devolved into rubbish but there's still plenty of good third-wave material out there. Really the difference between second and third-wave boils down to a rejection of the "sisterhood" that comes with the former. A lot of its theory comes from white, middle class western women that don't speak on the behalf of other backgrounds, so third-wave popped up to fill the role and got going from there.
has anyone actually watched the video at all
the book tells you how to be a human rights feminist instead of a "modern" feminist (anita sarkeesian) that you all are scared of
how is this bad

In the video he criticizes Swedish feminism with facts and plenty of examples.
The article says the book is "being sent out to all grade 2 high school students". I bet the books will be placed in school libraries so that those who choose to read it can. Either way I don't think this will be something obligatory. Whenever articles like these come out I feel like they're usually made out to be way worse than they actually are.
As left leaning as Sweden is, the things going on in various english/american colleges these days seem way worse than what I've ever experienced here.
People who criticize third wave feminism as bad and uphold second wave feminism as something great have no idea what they're talking about. Second wave feminism is far more radical and came up with most of the ideas that people hate and was a lot more sex-negative. It's funny how reactionaries seem to hate feminism so much while avoiding to do the most basic of research on the topic and understanding the theories, while appropriating second wave feminism as something they like when in reality everything they complain about feminism is second wave. I guess reactionaries hate doing research in general though, never bother to understand what they hate, they just hate it because of some made up strawman on tumblr who has a white male tears mug.

Both third wave and second wave feminism are full of crazy ideas.
:'(

I'm actually very interested in what you have to say about feminism. What ideas do you hate?
Spreading feminism far and wide sounds great but doing it with one book is pretty problematic
It reminds me of the way governments set up monopolies in certain industries to make a good more accessible through infrastructure expansion, only for the firm in question to end up putting out an awful product
or when you are working on a development project in Uganda that requires telecommunications, and you only work with one network operator, that then becomes corrupt from the influx of guaranteed currency
I could go on. Point is, I have no idea if this book is an effective tool for spreading feminism or not. The Swedish government should find ways to make all 16 year olds feminists through a diverse array of feminist media, including this book if its good.

another point: forcing everyone to read one specific book would probably cause some kind of backlash

No one's really forcing you to read the book and it's certainly not going to be the only cited piece of feminist literature, it's simply a introductory piece
as for the content I can't say much, but the book is well regarded (as well as her other books) and Adichie is known to not be a massive cunt, so I can only assume that the book isn't insane in it's proposals.
Sweden is a laughing stock.
So now our countries have even more in common, great
Also, I do not at all understand the mental gymnastics behind "Saying that the most competent person should get the job is intolerant". What is even going on anymore?
However, what many people seem to miss, is that it's just as retarded to say that, for instance a woman, should NOT get a job, even though she IS fully qualified and has the kind of competence that's required, simply because "but, it's a girl, she not supposed to do that kind of stuff"
And shit like that is harmful, because it will keep people from doing what they actually want to do.
Take women in STEM fields for example, they're an itty bitty minority, why? "Well, it's obvious, people with tits and vaginas are programmed by nature to like things like clothing design, oh, and being a kitchen slave"
It may be true to some extent, but can you honestly say that most guys would not be ridiculed or at the very least be seen as "gay" or "weird" for liking typically "girly" things? If you can't, then why would the same not be applicable to women?
Now you may say something along the lines of "yeah well people judge them because that's what nature has programmed us to do"
Well, I wouldn't, so I suppose I'm some kind of mutant? In that case I should probably start donating massive amounts of semen
True, one could just put the book down. Adding a suggested reading list or something to the end of the book would be nice.
I am totally onboard with a policy like this, I'm just trying to poke holes in it. It seems too simple.

Because it's the perfect represention of Sweden as things are right now, it's literally turning into tumblrland where nobody except selected candidates have any rights, which as of now are females and minorities, especially female minorities.

So human rights and personal liberties are bad now? How is that a representation of "nobody has rights anymore except them darn mudskins and women!!!"
Like yeah, all of Scandinavia (although Sweden's the worst at the moment) is sorta wobbly right now and is kinda trying to go in all directions at once, but you're talking as if white heterosexual men are about to get beaten in the streets or something, caring about and taking other people seriously as well =/= you no longer have any rights
Not to mention that the kind of feminism she's promoting will actually provide you as a white heterosexual male with more freedom and safety as well
