Trump describes Mexicans as "amazing" and "spectacular" on Mexico visit
30 replies, posted
US Republican candidate Donald Trump has defended his call for a wall on the Mexican border, during his visit to meet President Enrique Pena Nieto.
Mr Trump said he did not discuss who would pay for the wall.
He also called Mexicans "amazing" and "spectacular" people, in contrast to earlier comments branding Mexican migrants "rapists" and "murderers".
Mr Pena Nieto said Mexicans had been hurt but he respected that Mr Trump genuinely wanted to build relations.
Mr Trump will later fly to Phoenix, Arizona, to deliver a key speech on measures to tackle illegal immigration.
The Republican has seen his poll ratings slip since the party conventions last month.
Both nationally and in key states, he trails Hillary Clinton, who enjoys particularly strong support among minorities.
So is this a blanket statement, or is he referring to 'their best'?
Look, i dont like the guy, but he didnt say Mexican people were rapists and murderers, he said the people hopping the border illegally were rapists and murderers (in the context that "rapists and murderers" was more of a blanket statement about criminal elements coming in secretly but explained like a dipnugget).
Whether thats true or not, fuck if i know anything about who comes here illegally, most likely isnt, but lets be fair at least.
If all the rapists and murderers come here, only the amazing people will still be left in Mexico obviously :downs:

He said "they're sending us their rapist murders etc...etc...etc... some of them are good people" implying most illegal immigrants are bad people and SOME of them are good people. He could have phrased it the other way around and there would be no flack. He also somehow implied mexico is behind illegal immigration as a plan of some kind which vilifies everyone else in the country. You and I know this isn't the case so there's no point defending this.

Yeah, but he wasn't saying that Mexicans are bad people, just that the kind of person that would illegally leave his or her country to enter the US is more likely to be a criminal, because they've already shown disregard for the laws here.
Also, I don't think he was saying that Mexico was behind it, just that mexico wasn't doing anything to stop it and thus it is their fault.
~~~~~Reminder that I am not a trump supporter~~~~~
I think this is the quote the buzz comes from
"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're not sending you. They're not sending you. They're sending people that have lots of problems, and they're bringing those problems with us. They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."
I do think at that point he was insinuating that this was some kind of ploy by mexico the country. I don't think you can say that someone that illegally immigrated is automatically someone bringing drugs and crime and someone who is a rapist. He should have just flipped that all around and focus on the fact that even a normal person is still committing a crime which everyone still agrees illegal immigration is illegal.
I admit this could be totally taken out of context, but that's the message it appears he was saying at that point.
I love it when the OP tries to tell us our opinion and say how this is suddenly "backpedaling".
They aren't. They tend to be among the most law abiding citizens because they generally took a significant risk to come to the United States, often support a family back home, and are terrified that even the most minor of law enforcement contact could cause it all to come crashing down.
Why be a rapist or a murderer in the US? You have to somehow manage to get here and you have to deal with a much more competent police force.
People are just calling it like it is
i think he means trumps opinion. unless trump supporters are a hivemind with him now
Considering the contradicting things I've seen Trump supporters see and do, I really do believe they are in a genuine Hivemind with him and he's secretly controlling them all through the power of M E M E M A G I C and H I G H E N E R G Y.
... or maybe people refuse to think for themselves sometimes, I don't know.
This is a very interesting backpedal by the way but I don't think it's going to go down well with hardcore Trump supporters. Then again, they love their contradictions...
Even if you ignore the rapist comment, the fact he wants to build a wall across Mexico and make them pay for it is a pretty obvious indicator of what he thinks of them really.
They sound like a fucking cult at times, and not even his backtracking phases them. They revel in this kind of shit because it just gives them more "well he ACTUALLY said THIS and you're just being misled by LIBRALS" fodder.
Good thing we have legions of Freudian sleuths who can tell us what he REALLY thinks! Haha gottem!
I'm referring to us as all the people viewing the thread, he's putting a spin on it, and that's lame.
Sure ara jaysus now man sure someone would have done it anyway, just let OP take care of it for the luv of god. I mean ya know it's backpedalling anyway, tis obvious from the words he spoke.
no he's referring to trump
Trump saying this would be taken as backpedaling no matter what OP says. OP could praise Trump to high heaven and most people would still call bullshit on this due to previous statements said by the orange fucknugget.
He never said Mexicans were bad though? He openly stated many times that they are smart dealers and win on trade against the US
He says that about every country, because he's trying to portray the US as a failing country that's being exploited to the core, so he can "Make America Great Again™" by starting trade wars with everybody.
Even if you ignore the rapist comment, the fact he wants to build a wall across Mexico and make them pay for it is a pretty obvious indicator of what he thinks of them really.
How does wanting to build a border wall mean he doesn't like Mexico?
I love it when the OP tries to tell us our opinion and say how this is suddenly "backpedaling".
Even the BBC points out he's contradicting what he's formerly said.
The reason backpedaling doesn't phase them is because they couldn't give a single fuck about policy. They just care about the fact he's loud, unPC and anti establishment. They follow the man and nothing else.
I don't think this qualifies as backpedaling, he backpedaled on his Muslims stances yea, but until he starts saying the Wall was just a suggestion I can't really see this as backpedaling.
Speaking about that trade, during the conference, they did bring up renegotiating NAFTA.
On illegal immigration, both Trump and Nieto agreed that it is an issue for both countries.
Also, Nieto said at the end that they still have to hear anything about Clinton meeting with him, and that Trump accepted the proposal for the meeting really quickly.
With that said, it is a situation where Trump is pretty much throwing the gauntlet towards Clinton. She doesn't have much planned for next month in the way of rallies or interviews, so it isn't like she can blame a busy schedule. In fact, Trump is doing yet another one of his political rallies (in Phoenix, Arizona) today after this meeting with the Mexican President. Trump has with this meeting pretty much set a benchmark for this election, or at least, is forcing Clinton to have such a meeting as well. Say all you want about Trump, but people do notice that he is going out there and gets stuff done. And all the while, Clinton is barely showing herself in public. In her last political rally, she didn't get much out apart from how Trump is probably leading a global alt-right conspiracy and how Nigel Farage is an evil man, along with another slew of buzzwords, without actually getting anything about her own policies across. It's a very big contrast compared how many appearances Trump has been making over the last few months. I can see why rumors about Clinton's health started popping up as well. Back on the meeting, Trump came over as presidential in that meeting, which should be enough reasons for the Clinton camp to not underestimate the debates at all. And something tells me that they are underestimating Trump so far. They blared about how Trump's meeting would probably a major disaster, but we saw the complete opposite happen today. Trump can apparently be presidential. Which should cause some major pressure on Clinton's camp since Clinton has to go out there as well, and has to come up with a better performance. They pretty much have to gamble for the debates as well on what approach Trump is taking for it, leaving quite the advantage to Trump in that case.
Anyway, enough with that analysis. Onto the final part, Trump said that they haven't discussed about the payment of the wall. Which is oblivious since Trump isn't authorised for that due to the Logan Act, and secondly, it would be foolish for Nieto as well to even bring it up. It would show in Nieto's case that he is willing to do it for someone who isn't even in a political position of power, which would show some serious political weakness on his part as well.
Now that he has to win the support of the average American and not just the average Republican it's only natural that he would "change his mind".
Mexican Spider-man?
This is backpedaling. He's reading from a card. When he said "they're rapists, they're criminals," he was speaking off the top of his head, with his attention out to the crowd. He's very very clearly reading a prepared quote from a card in the video - he doesn't even look up for 80% of the video.
He sounds so incredibly uncomfortable speaking that prepared statement, because he didn't write it. He's being pushed moderate by his campaign, which is a good thing for his campaign, but in doing so he loses all of his conviction, his "honesty," and his energy (sad!). He seriously sounds like he's reading an obituary compared to how he sounds while improvising at his US rallies.
