A council candidate dressed as a penguin called Professor Pongoo has received more votes than the Liberal Democrats in Edinburgh.
Professor Pongoo (real name Mike Ferrigan) was an independent candidate who had pledged to wear the penguin outfit to every council meeting if he was elected.
Prior to the election, he told STV that he wanted to bring some "lightness and humour to the affair."
It was reported in the same article that Pongoo was "a six foot penguin from planet Piper [who] stands little chance of getting elected."
As results came in, it was revealed that Professor Pongoo polled 444 votes, beating the Liberal Democrats' 370 and the Green party candidate's 322 in the bid for Pental Hills Ward for the City of Edinburgh council, reports STV.
Could defiantly make political debates much more interesting. I noticed a lot of people voting on personality for the London Mayor more than policy, which isn't surprising when they tend to promise similar things in their manifestos. A way to make the youth more involved at least!
Wait what?
A joke candidate actually winning an election, even a local one? Are the political parties over there that fucked up?

In an area near where I live the Lib Dems got the same amount of votes as the BNP (61).
Hahaha british political system is a joke
Hahaha british political system is a joke
So the ability for parties other than the main 3 to get a large number of votes make the system a joke?
Ok.

To be honest I'm surprised a joke candidate in a penguin suit hasn't already conquered the white house.

Good for you. Now don't turn this thread into an argument, which you look like you're about to start.

Ok, whatever. Now let's leave it at that and get back to the fact that this guy now has to attend all the meeting in the penguin suit.
Why is there always so many angry people in this section
I was expecting an actual penguin.

Pongoo for prime minister 2015!
Steven Colbert was supposed to run for governor of something IIRC. Despite claiming it as a joke, people actually wanted him to run. Did he get anywhere with that?

Where does it say he won anywhere, he just polled more than the Lib-Dems, who are the smallest of the 3 main parties.
