The days of tatty fivers are numbered, after the Bank of England unveiled new plans to smarten up the note.
Five pound notes are currently the dirtiest and most-damaged in circulation for two main reasons.
Firstly, while most of us get our money from cash machines, just 0.2% of ATMs dispense fivers meaning we rarely get crisp new notes. Secondly, damaged or tatty notes get taken out of circulation when shops take them to banks – however, most fivers are handed out as change by shops and never make it to a bank.
But the Bank of England has plans to tackle both of these problems.
“By Easter next year, the number of £5 notes dispensed from ATMs should have increased five-fold,” said Bank of England governor Mervyn King.
“In addition, some other large retailers are also working to increase the number of £5s they give out as change.”
The Bank predicts these initiatives will mean there should be an extra 400 million crisp new £5 notes entering circulation each year by 2012.
On top of this, the notes should be sorted more often by then, meaning the tattier ones are removed.
“The fiver should start looking as smart as the three other denominations,” King said.
£2 billion in fact
£2 billion worth of new fivers... That's a tall order there. I guess they're gonna start making them outta smart materials eventually, so they can stay crisp longer.
It always seemed a bit stupid to me that ATMs don't dispense five pound notes.
Where I live there's one cash machine in the entire town that gives 5 pound notes.
I remember a local ATM being able to dispense £5 notes but it doesn't any more.
I got a new one the other day, I thought it was fake because of how thick and crisp it was. There's nothing worse than getting one that someone's selotaped together
Fivers are also used the most for snorting cocaine, which explains quite a few things.
this reminds me of this half-baked conspiracy plan I thought of where you lace all banknotes that fall into your possession with some kind of disease that passes on through physical contact. my reasoning was that since they're hardly ever cleaned or replaced I'd be able to infect thousands of people
Why don't we just use plastic money like Australia or Hong Kong, it's awesome, it doesn't tear, it doesn't matter if it gets wet.

If I take out £10 I always end up spending it within a week even if I only took out the money to buy something specifically for £5.
:(

And if you have two Australian notes you can make money goggles!
