White House gives cool welcome to bill restricting online ammo sales
The White House gave a cool welcome on Monday to Democratic legislation that would effectively ban online or mail-order purchases of ammunition in the aftermath of the mass shooting at an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater.
"I haven't seen the specific piece of legislation that has been offered up today," spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters at the daily press briefing. "But as that and other pieces of legislation make their way through the legislative process, we'll evaluate them."
The proposal, crafted by Democratic Senator Frank Lautenberg and Democratic Representative Carolyn McCarthy, aims to restrict the ability of Americans to buy unlimited quantities of ammunition over the Internet, or by mail order, anonymously.
President Barack Obama has called for a common sense response to the slaughter in Aurora. But the White House has played down his appetite for new legislation as opposed to tightening or toughening existing measures—such as background checks—to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals or the mentally ill. And the president has underlined his support for the Second Amendment to the Constitution.
"He believes in the second amendment of the constitution, in the right to bear arms," Earnest said again Monday. "But he also believes that we should take robust steps, within existing law, to ensure that guns don't fall in the hands of criminals or others who shouldn't have them.
The new legislation, dubbed the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act, rests on four pillars, according to Lautenberg's office:
1 It requires anyone selling ammunition to be a licensed dealer.
2 It requires ammunition buyers who are not licensed dealers to present photo identification at the time of purchase, effectively banning the online or mail order purchase of ammo by regular civilians.
3 It requires licensed ammunition dealers to maintain records of the sale of ammunition.
4 It requires licensed ammunition dealers to report the sale of more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition to an unlicensed person within any five consecutive business days.

This is amazingly retarded and does absolutely nothing.
This will do absolutely nothing but piss off the wrong group of people. There is no problem with ammunition sales.
Sounds fine to me. Whats the problem?
Sounds fine to me. Whats the problem?
They're restricting ammo sales, not gun sales.
Sounds fine to me. Whats the problem?
Read the post above yours.
All this is doing is making a big ass log of people who buy ammunition. Oh man, they're going to know when Im about to go hunting
Sounds fine to me. Whats the problem?
Doesn't stop absolutely anything regarding shootings. This won't hurt crime at all.
Sounds fine to me. Whats the problem?
It's a feel-good measure that does not even slightly hinder a deranged gunman.
What good is a gun if you don't have ammo?
But I would like to see a law like this for guns too.
In theory:
All of a sudden, a knife massacre occurs! Better ban knives!
Then a hammer massacre occurs! Ban hammers too!
Finally, a frying pan massacre occurs! We obviously have to ban frying pans too!
Get where I'm going? Won't work.
The bill isn't all that bad, but it's not doing any good either.
Except there are occasions when buying rounds in the low thousands makes complete sense.
Ammunition goes on sale and is often sold in bulk.

Going along with this law, it would be more like,
Knife massacre? Ban sharpeners!
Hammer massacre? Ban handles!
Frying pan massacre? Ban eggs!
Couldn't you still do it but just go to their house and pick it up?

Except ammo doesn't really have a legitimate use, especially in bulk.

Even then, all of those could be used as blunt force weapons that don't require ammo.
Banning ammunition won't stop the problem.
yeah because you can bludgeon a large number of people just as easily as firing a machine gun.
Except ammo doesn't really have a legitimate use, especially in bulk.
Hello, they can be used in firing ranges and in the wild with guns!
Even if they completely banned online ammunition and gun sales they would still be sold over the internet - the deep web with its complete anonymity is a haven for this sort of stuff. Not to mention you can just buy them in person. So this does nothing useful except add a burden of paperwork.
Except ammo doesn't really have a legitimate use, especially in bulk.
I can go through several hundred rounds of ammo on a range day
Also ammo has a pretty legitimate use for gun owners, just saying
maybe you should get a real hobby
America should really learn to stop curtailing civil liberties in response to every single tragic event thinking it'll actually prevent it from occurring again. Norway handled it best.

You clearly have never owned or fired a gun. Even a short time at a firing range, you go through a lot of ammo.
maybe you should get a real hobby
Define "real hobby."
maybe you should get a real hobby
i don't go shooting often but it is a bit of fun; tell me, what's your hobby?
maybe you should get a real hobby
Gimme a list of your hobbies so I can ridicule them as stupid and pointless:
1) Posting on Facepunch with dumb remarks

Unlike the Norwegians, we in the US just like to hear about these feelgood bills in times of turmiol, as opposed to retaining common sense.
Oh and if politicians dont vote on feelgood bills after a crisis they automatically become bad in the eyes of the people, pretty much.

hi guess what
guns are made specifically to kill things
all of those things aren't
hi guess what

Rather irrelevant. If there weren't guns, there would be knives used.
The reason people use guns most of the time for killing is because well, they're everywhere and they're pretty effective at it.
