How the "Brainwriter" is overshadowing Google Glass and Oculus Rift at London event
Not Impossible Labs just revealed the Brainwriter, designed to read and write brain waves for fully paralyzed people so they can draw and communicate, and it's now on display in London.

At a new tech exhibition in London on Thursday, sitting between Google Glass and Oculus Rift, is a wearable you've probably never heard of. But it's the one that could have more of a revolutionary, world-changing impact than any of us realize.
It's called the Brainwriter -- and it's an open source, do-it-yourself device that pairs with ocular recognition technology to enable the fully paralyzed to draw and communicate. It is on exhibit at the Barbican's "Digital Revolution" in London as the headliner in the "Wearable Technologies" section.

I salute the creator of this device. May there be more such in the future.
These kinds of devices have existed for many years now.

So have VR headsets. There's a lot of differences between the first unwieldly prototypes and the consumer version even if the concept stays the same.
Now I can finally write an erotic novel, exactly how I feel about it.
I wonder what using this is like, much be so strange being able to send signals to a computer using nothing but thought.

Combine with Oculus, and we're yet another step closer to the matrix.
Looks pretty promising.
I heard that it takes Stephen Hawking ages to write his sentences, does this mean he'll be able to dish them out super fast?
You know, I still know a lot of people who go "I wish I lived a life like in the scifi movies". Then something like this comes along and I'm like "bitch please we've got a machine that FUCKING TRANSLATES BRAINWAVES" I mean come ON how cool is that!? Think about it for a second, that thing reads what you THINK and puts it on paper.

A word a minute, I believe.

Hawking is slowly loosing more of his muscle ability as the years roll on, iirc it takes him a minute to write a word (?), he's requested long ago for scientist to look into transmitting brain thought to text so he can continue his writings and lectures as he starts being more of a vegetable

Not be insulting, but he's slowly turning into a brain in a jar.

He really should be the first in line for any kind of brain/robot body transfer shit.
He really should be the first in line for any kind of brain/robot body transfer shit.
I can see it now, he'll be giving a lecture in his robot body and this young earth creationist will start in...
Next day, sensationalist headlines will explode from Mecha Hawking's rampage.

I think he's only got the use of one muscle in his left cheek, which he uses to tap a button to scroll through menus. From what I've heard, he's actually very reluctant to use new interfaces and technology, like it's a sort of admission of defeat on his part.
To be honest I'd be surprised if he doesn't now have a webcam or something that could track his eye movement and translate it to a screen like a mouse.
I wonder if this could be used for someone in a vegetative state.
When this becomes a popular device in Australia, you'll be arrested for thinking about the word "cunt".
Gerald's arrival to the fire station really symbolizes, damn Tiffany had a good ass!
This is like humanity's first babystep into becoming a telepathic species.
He's quite old already, what's the point. Brains don't last forever, 100 years max, by that point there will be hardly much productive thinking in there.
even though lots of people live well past 100?

Bullshit, you can't keep the entire Australian population in jail at once.

The place is already a prison...
I want one.
Lots of people? That's some news to me.
Yeah and their mental abilities no different than in their twenties, right? People slowly lose brain-cells whole life and the rate increases past 50 years mark, that's why old people don't get better. Those who use their brain actively tho lose them slower, but still, brain doesn't last forever. Far from it.
I think you need to check your facts some more buddy.

And in 20 years we'll be complaining when it doesn't work exactly right.
He's quite old already, what's the point. Brains don't last forever, 100 years max, by that point there will be hardly much productive thinking in there.
You're right, brains don't last forever, not sure about the timespan though. However, the inevitable forward march of scientific progress can and will find a way around it.
Scientists are already working on fiddling with telomeres in DNA to stop and maybe even undo aging by fixing telomere decay. If we can find a way to prevent these protective ends of our DNA strands from being slowly worn down into nothingness, we can prevent the rest of the DNA from being damaged in replication, thereby stopping the deteriorating effects of aging.
A mechanical and computer-based solution could also be present, in the form of mind uploading. It's only a matter of "when" rather than "if" when it comes to making computers equal to or greater than brains. If we somehow find a way to transfer consciousness, or just gradually replace the brain itself with a synthetic equivalent in a manner that doesn't touch consciousness, we can become fully synthetic.
Hell, you might even be able to achieve agelessness with a weird combination of genetics and robotics. Hook a brain with some kind of telomere/cell/etc. fix to prevent aging damage into a robotic body it can interface with, and let 'er rip. I imagine it couldn't be too hard to keep a brain alive in a jar, as far as I know you'd only need oxygenation, nutrient-supplementing, electrical and control systems wired into the brain. Find a way to cram a brain into a robotic body with proper life support functions, and to give that brain full control of the body, and you'll have a mostly-synthetic human.
Of course, I'm just a layman with no scientific experience, so I could be talking about some fictional/impossible shit. Then again, we went from flying our first planes, to nuclear weapons, to landing on the friggin' moon within a century, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if I got to queue up for a brain-in-a-jar procedure by the time I'm middle-aged.
Also, what's the point of keeping Hawking alive, you ask? Brilliant minds like Hawking's are incredibly powerful and rare, and he has a vested interest in science and technological progress. I'm pretty sure you could call him today's Einstein, and no one would dispute it. It's in the best interest of science and humanity to keep him alive and talking for as long as our medical and scientific power can manage. And, from less of a "greater good" angle, Hawking's a nice guy that got royally fucked-over by a disease, so it's only right to try and provide him with a decent life in spite of his disability.

I remember when someone played Garry's Mod 8.3b with their mind. It was pretty cool but this is totally different.

More like getting your teeth knocked in because you'll pass some guy and think "fuck me look at the head on that cunt" and start a town riot
