CNN: Obama to send more troops to Southwest border
President Obama will deploy up to 1,200 more National Guard troops to the U.S. border with Mexico, an administration official said Tuesday. In addition, Obama will request $500 million to supplement current spending for enhanced border protection and law enforcement activities, the official said. The National Guard troops will help with drug enforcement efforts and intelligence efforts until Customs and Border Protection can recruit and train additional officers and agents to serve on the border, the official said. The news followed Obama's lunch meeting with Senate Republicans, where Sen. John McCain of Arizona raised the issue of increased border security. McCain and fellow Arizona Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, as well as Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, have called for Obama to send more troops to the border region. "It's simply not enough," McCain said Tuesday on the Senate floor. He called for 3,000 more National Guard troops just for the Arizona-Mexico border. Giffords, who had called for the National Guard's deployment immediately after the March 27 murder of Cochise County rancher Rob Krentz, said Obama's step was "the right thing." "Arizonans know that more boots on the ground means a safer and more secure border," Giffords said in a written statement. "Washington heard our message." A previous troop deployment to the border region, called Operation Jump Start, ended in 2008. The operation sent more than 6,000 troops to California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas to repair secondary border fence, construct nearly 1,000 metal barriers and fly Border Patrol agents by helicopter to intercept illegal immigrants. An administration official confirmed to Fox News that Obama plans to deploy the National Guard troops as needed and request $500 million for "enhanced border protection and law enforcement." The official said the National Guard would be used to "provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support," as well as support "counternarcotics enforcement" and provide "training capacity" until the Border Patrol can bring more officers on board. The additional funding would be used to improve border security technology and increase the number of agents, investigators and prosecutors targeting drug, human and weapons traffickers. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., praised the administration for "finally" answering the calls for more troops, while another lawmaker said 1,200 troops is "simply not enough." The announcement came as Senate Republicans began introducing several border security amendments to a $60 billion war spending bill under consideration on the floor. They showed no signs of halting that effort in light of the president's decision. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., proposed an amendment to send 6,000 National Guard troops to the border -- a move Republicans want to pay for with unspent stimulus money. McCain said on the floor that he appreciates Obama's decision to deploy up to 1,200 troops but asked for more. "I think it is a recognition of the violence on the border which has been really beyond description in some respects," McCain said. "But it's simply not enough." Senate Republicans confronted Obama on immigration and border security earlier in the day during a rare, private meeting on Capitol Hill. Though top Obama Cabinet officials critical of Arizona's controversial new law have acknowledged they never read the bill, McCain said Obama told the senators he has read it and still believes it could allow for discrimination. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, who described the meeting as "testy," said the president "wasn't embracing" the call to secure the borders before pressing forward with a comprehensive immigration policy overhaul. The administration official described Obama's announcement Tuesday as "part of his comprehensive plan to secure the southwest border." Giffords, who was among several lawmakers who requested more border security after Arizona rancher Robert Krentz was killed by a suspected illegal immigrant at the end of March, praised Obama for the National Guard announcement. "(Arizona residents) know that more boots on the ground means a safer and more secure border. Washington heard our message," she said.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/05/25/obama-deploy-national-guard-troops-mexico-border/ Is it just me, or does it seem like Obama is being made to do this kicking and screaming? Becauese it really sounds to me like he didn't want to do this. Oh and there seems to be of rerun here too. Case in point, Obama's General calling for more troops and only getting about less than half the amount requested.
Oh I get it. When the black Socialist Communist Nazi foreign-bornDemocrat does it, you don't like it but when the patriotic, courageous, god-fearing old white Republican does it, you wave your flag and scream "yee-haw." He's doing something you LIKE and yet you still complain about it. If Obama started two new wars and a new Guantanamo you would still find something to complain about.
Something tells me all you see is the complaint and not the content of it. I like that he's finally doing it, but it just seems like a half-assed effort.
Something tells me all you see is the complaint and not the content of it. I like that he's finally doing it, but it just seems like a half-assed effort.
Obama doesn't want it. However, his opinion differs from public opinion.
what a waste you can partially thank the war drugs on this shit
The war on drugs is a waste of time, I think we can all agree on that. The one thing no politician seems to understand is that removing laws against weed, not increasing government involvement, is probably the best bet at hurting the cartels and decreasing crime.

For the past forty fucking years we've failed doing these same tactics, trying to stop this shit at its source. The solution is to stop it at home, by legalizing drugs. Legalize weed, drug cartels die, drug violence dies, Mexico rebounds and becomes less shitty, people stop leaving there. Problem FUCKING solved.

I love how the local potheads all scream "LEGALIZE WEED!", as if that is going to solve all the world's issues, stop crime, eliminate organized crime, cure all diseases, cause Jesus to come back, end natural disasters, and cause us to find alien life.

And stop the prison systems from being overrun by stoner's that did nothing wrong besides sit on their lazy asses and smoke...

And people still make moonshine, so I'm guessing the cartels would still make money off "tax free" weed.

[editline]07:27PM[/editline]
And people still make moonshine, so I'm guessing the cartels would still make money off "tax free" weed.
if they did, it wouldn't be anything near what they make now with weed illegal.
If it gets legalized, it'll most likely get taxed. If the same quality control were applied to pot the issue would be negligible.
Shut the fuck up Glaber. He's doing something that the right likes so deal with it.
Moonshine is shit compared to booze you buy at a liquor store. If the same quality control were applied to pot the issue would be negligible.
Yet moonshine is still in production. Not saying it won't hurt the cartels, but it certainly won't make them go away.
Yet moonshine is still in production. Not saying it won't hurt the cartels, but it certainly won't make them go away.
no one said they'd completely go away

A vast majority of cartels are funded by cocaine. That's where the big cash is. Thinking weed being legalized will kill cartels or hurt cartels is stupid talk. Infact, it's you grasping straws to have an excuse to say "Aww man if WEED was LEGAL this would not happen maaaan."

Holy fuck, you complain even when he does exactly what you want. Christ.
That's because he's half-assing it.
Something tells me all you see is the complaint and not the content of it. I like that he's finally doing it, but it just seems like a half-assed effort.
Yes, over a thousand troops. I wipe my ass with a thousand troops.
That's because he's half-assing it.
:geno:
That's because he's half-assing it.
Part of that is that it's not that big of a fucking deal, and there's far more important shit to be doing. The point is, he's helping you, and you're complaining about it. [editline]12:14AM[/editline]
:geno:
ya if obama was a real american he woud just nuke mexico thats what the FF would do
This guy
The cartels would die though. There would still be small groups of people selling the shit illegally but there would be no more US cartels if drugs were legalised.
Lets get those Federal Meth Labs up and running.
It's sure as hell a lot better than people doing it in their home.
